Since Nintendo entered the video game industry in 1974, they have successfully brought to market a number of innovative products that proved to be quite disruptive. I would rate their willingness to adapt their products and process innovations fairly high.

Their success in the console and handheld video game market can be attributed to their first success; the introduction of Donkey King to the Mario world (Davis, 2014). What would follow is a trove of video game characters specifically licensed for and intended to be used on Nintendo platforms.

Nintendo would dominate this space for some time with their NES console lineup, and more recent, the Wii system. Though technologically, these systems were innovative, its the ease of use throughout their product line that makes them innovative (“Nintendo Business Strategy,” 2017). By making their games easy to use, regardless of age, with recognizable characters, Nintendo has targeted several segments of this market as an adaptive strategy.

Current and future innovations include the portable Switch system and augmented reality gaming; which will be critical for sustainability through innovation (“Nintendo Business Strategy,” 2017).

Nintendo is very dependent on their ability to innovate and willingness to adapt for organizational effectiveness and profitability. In a highly competitive industry such as video games, its important that Nintendo continue to do the things in the unorthodox manner that made them so successful.
