In Chapter 2 of “Becoming Mexican American,” Across the Dividing Line, Sanchez talks about the border being a social construct. Explain his view of the border as a social construction, and discuss what the border region means for people on both sides of this social constructed line.

Well, this week you read about Americanization. Here the idea was that if people can become more “American” they who become more of something, may be accepted into the larger American framework. Of course, you also read how people in the Mexican-American community sought a way to perserve a culture.
Within this context answer the following questions:
- According to chapter 4 in Becoming Mexican-American, describe the idea of American within the context of Americanization Programs? Explain what you think of the idea of American in the 1920s.
- Distinguish between both the Americanization programs and the Mexicanization programs, what were there differences and similarities?
- Do you think we need Americanization programs today? What purpose would they serve?
