Before You Begin

The Importance of Academic Honesty

An integral part of scholarship and an important component of ethical research and scholarship is the appropriate use of references and citations to give credit to the ideas and words of others. You must adhere to Capella University Policy 3.01.01 Academic Integrity & Honesty (linked below). The following steps will help ensure your understanding of Capella University’s Academic Integrity & Honesty policy. Even if you have seen these previously, please take the time now to remind yourself of these requirements and their importance.

What’s Different About This Course

At the beginning of this course you will be assigned an instructor who will work with you throughout the next 10 weeks. Interaction in this course will be between you and your Instructor via feedback and at least one telephone call every 2 weeks. There are no discussions in this course; the focus will be on your Weekly Progress Report. Please reach out to your assigned instructor during Week 1 to schedule a call to discuss your specialization and topical area.

This course requires you to submit Weekly Progress Reports. These reports should be viewed as journaling your progress each week in your research. The more detailed and scholarly your work is, the greater feedback and guidance you can receive from your instructor. To ensure your instructor has adequate time to review and provide feedback on this assignment before you begin next week’s work, all assignments in this course—with the exception of the final assignment in Unit 10—are due on Saturdays. The Unit 10 assignment will be due no later than the last day of the course, which ends on Friday. Instructors will review and provide feedback no later than 72 hours after the assignment is due.

Multimedia

Review the following interactive tool. You will use this tool to craft an initial strategy for your literature search, part of your Week 2 Progress Report assignment.

RefWorks

Software is capable of supporting very important aspects of the work of the researcher. RefWorks is a research management tool that helps you collect, organize, and store citations from library databases and other resources. A personal RefWorks account is optional for storing citations.

For your literature reviews in this course, you have the option to use RefWorks to create a searchable database of all the books, articles, and dissertations you collect along the doctoral journey. Creating such a database is strongly recommended, as this will pay incredible dividends down the road in the comprehensive exam and dissertation phases. You may also select other software including Excel spreadsheets. You will not submit this as part of your weekly Progress Report assignment.

If you do not yet have a RefWorks account, review RefWorks for information on how to set up an account and find tutorials on using the tool.

[u03s2] Unit 3 Study 2

Empirical Research and Threads of Literature

Empirical research is “based upon an observed and measured phenomena and derives knowledge from actual experience rather than from theory or belief” (Penn State University Libraries, 2019). Empirical research is reported in studies that include: a specific research question or questions to be answered; a population that is studied; phenomena or theory(ies) that support the study; and specific study results.

Empirical research differs from articles that are akin to essay papers or literature reviews where the authors provide generalized knowledge about a phenomenon or theory, but it is not specifically studied. The Capella library offers an interactive media piece that shows scholarly article components, such as Introduction, Methodology, Conceptual or Theoretical Framework, Data, and Results. See the resource Anatomy of a Scholarly Article.

While it is not required in this course, when you are preparing your Dissertation Research Plan (beginning in Track 1 of Residency), you will be required to support your research gap using empirical research literature; therefore, it is not too soon to begin identifying empirical literature and distinguishing them from nonempirical works.

As you research your topical area, scan through the titles of the results within your Database searches. When reviewing the titles, mentally place the titles into threads or streams or “piles” of categories in the literature. You might find a number of studies that focus on different industries, gender or ethnicity studies, or subtopics within your topical area you selected in Unit 1. As you identify a thread of literature, note it in your Research Log. Identify 3 threads of literature that you have found in your research.

Required Readings

Use the Internet to read the following:

      • After reading this page, select one of your research studies from your annotated bibliography Appendix A and determine whether or not the article is reporting empirical research.
    • In the Updates and Handouts section, access the following:
      • Watch the presentation Narrowing the Funnel, which explains the identification of the threads of literature within your study.
      • Watch the Kaltura video, Developing Sections 1.1 and 1.2 of the DRP, to understand how the threads of literature are included as part of the dissertation research plan.

For all annotated bibliographies developed beginning with Unit 3 throughout the course, mark each article in which you believe the authors conducted and reported empirical research with “E” at the end of the bibliography.

  • Seminal Works and Theoretical Perspectives

INTRODUCTION

Research and theory on your topic will have evolved along a chronological thread in which each scholar builds on the insights and knowledge that were revealed in prior work. To uncover a viable topic that leads to a research study that meets the standards for scientific merit, it is critical that you understand and track this development in your review of the literature.

In this unit, you will identify those works that anchor your topic in the seminal research and theoretical perspectives of the scholars whose work has stood the test of time and forms the basis on which subsequent scholars have grounded their contributions.

INTRODUCTION

This week, you will build on the work you did in Unit 5 to propose the methodology appropriate for your topic. Be sure to update the chart you submitted in your Week 5 Progress Report to include the additional studies you have uncovered since that submission. Keep a copy of the chart. Revise and update it throughout your development and execution of your research, as it will be useful in your final write-up.

Note that if the research on your topic area is predominately quantitative, this would be an indication that the theory and constructs are highly developed. Validated instruments that convert the constructs into variables that can be measured and analyzed with inferential statistical techniques will exist that you can use for your own research. Alternatively, if the research is qualitative, this would indicate that theory and knowledge are still being developed and exploratory qualitative approaches would be appropriate.
