The Pygmalion Effect and the Golem Effect are two related phenomena that occur when people are influenced by the actions of a person or group of people. The Pygmalion Effect is the phenomenon in which people perform better when positive expectations result in positive performance. It is also known as the star effect, in which a single person or a small group of people perform better than the rest when they are around the star. The Pygmalion Effect occurs when people are influenced by a person’s actions, such as a celebrity who represents a particular ideal. The Golem Effect is the opposite of the Pygmalion Effect. In the Golem Effect, people perform worse when they are around a certain person rather than another; lower expectations lead to lower performance.

An example of the Pygmalion Effect is when an actor improves his or her performance when working with a certain star. The Golem Effect occurs when people are influenced by the actions of a group of people, such as a community or society, who share a certain ideal. An example of the Golem Effect is when a community improves its safety when the police force is improved. The Pygmalion Effect and the Golem Effect are related because they both involve the influence of people on each other. However, they are different because the Pygmalion Effect is when a single person positively influences other people, while the Golem Effect is when a group of people positively influences other people.

The Pygmalion effect shows that way we perceive others and how we engage with them. It might be negative or positive.  When we have higher expectations of a person it can lead to higher performance and if we have negative expectations that can lead to low performance. Also when there is low expectations this can lead to treating people differently. It is important that we realize we have different expectations so instead of looking for weakness in others we should look for their positive potentials. At work when i achieve a goal, I feel a sense of accomplishment. If I am challenged, I can exceed my own expectations and others as well. Whether its a student, employee, or anyone else, it is important to provide feedback. We must give a person a chance to improve, develop, and prove us wrong.

In the Golem Effect we believe that some people do not have the required skills set, or drive to succeed. This effect can sense that the trust in them is limited and this makes them feel the worse in themselves. If we keep saying that a person is not good enough in doing an assignment this person becomes depressed and lose confidence in their ability to do things. Negative expectations by my supervisor, another employee, or myself can have a negative impact on my performance. Expectations are all around us. Expectations are everywhere, placed on individuals, supervisors at work, friends or family, and of him/herself. These expectations can control our behavior and the results of our actions.
