Descriptive Writing essay

Please write at least a 5 paragraph essay responding to one of the the following. Before submitting the essay, be sure to follow all guidelines and advice listed so far in the course. Remember that effective description is much more than using more adjectives and adverbs. Good description always makes some type of connection to the audience (has a purpose to the writing that is worthwhile for the reader). Essays must be MLA formatted, including an interesting title.

1. Describe a generation – the younger generation, your generation, or the older generation. What are the typical attitudes, behaviors and mentality of this generation? What should we learn from this generation?

2. Describe a cultural icon (such as an entertainer or a prominent building). How did this person or object become iconic? What biases or ideals does s/he or it represent and are those ideals good or bad for society?

3. Describe a problem in your community – rudeness, traffic, noise, schools, crime. How and why does this problem exist and what are the consequences of this problem? What possible solutions could be put in place to correct this problem?

Descriptive strategies:

-Concrete / Specific word choices

-Vivid Verbs

-Sensory imagery

So to write a great descriptive essay, know the point of the writing, then go back through the draft and add these strategies to any section that is emphasizing your point! SHOW THE READER THE INFORMATION, DON’T TELL IT
