Module Overview

In today’s health care environment, financial realities play a critical role in many, if not most, decisions. All levels of health care managers should understand the basics of health care finance, common public and private health insurance payers, reimbursement levels, and the various methods of reimbursement calculation.

In this first module, we begin examining the financing of health care services in the United States population. What are the purposes of having health care insurance? Who are our insured, our underinsured, and our uninsured? Is the level of health insurance coverage in this country getting better, worse, or staying the same over time? What disparities persist, and what effects do these have on the population’s health status and outcomes? Why is having health insurance so important anyway – does it really help us? We’ll look at current data and current research to examine each of these areas, as a foundation to understanding the financing of health care.

Module 1 – Case

THE FINANCING OF HEALTH CARE IN THE UNITED STATES

Assignment Overview

What’s the importance of health insurance? No one plans to get sick or hurt, but most people need to access health care services at some point in their lives. Health insurance status in the United States is varied and inconsistent – and it is changing over time. Critics argue both in favor of or against universal coverage, citing both benefits and drawbacks of coverages and their associated costs.

Assessing the impact of health insurance coverage on a person’s health is complex; health effects may take a long time to be realized, can vary based on insurance benefits/lack thereof, and are often clouded by confounding variables. Let’s begin our Case by examining the purposes of health insurance, the current health insurance status of the U.S.population, and what current research tells us regarding the use vs. outcomes of health insurance coverage.

  3. Explain how health insurance coverage affects health care utilization, disease treatment and outcomes, self-reported health, and mortality.
