GMGT 1010 – MISSION STATEMENT FINAL DRAFT – WINTER 2022

This reflective paper should demonstrate how your mission statement has either changed or been reinforced through exposure to the critical issues discussed in class. In either case, you will articulate a thoughtful mission statement for your career – whether or not it is a career in business/management. It is imperative that your mission statement and accompanying narrative demonstrates impact on others – whether it is your co-workers, customers, industry, or society. It is not sufficient to state a personal goal such as, “I will make a lot of money to live the best possible life for myself and family.” It is assumed that this is the personal goal of any economically rational person. Your mission statement will reflect your “value-added” to society.

Your paper must:

(1) Be between 1,500 and 2,000 words (references not required, but please cite if you choose to do so)

(2) Use 12-point Times New Roman font (double-spaced)

(3) Use APA Style formatting (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/)

NO ABSTRACT REQUIRED

(4) Include in-text citations and a bibliography of referenced materials (if you

You will submit document IN EITHER WORD OR PDF FORM to the Dropbox labelled “Last Name, First Name FINAL MISSION STATEMENT” on UM Learn. Late papers will be subjected to 20% deduction for every day, or part thereof, late. No submissions accepted after four days, unless we have made arrangements prior to the assignment deadline.

Directions:

(1) Restate your original mission statement at the beginning of the paper. Italicize, bold, underline, or otherwise make clear that this is your mission statement. Effective mission statements are approximately 15 – 40 words in length. As noted above, this is not a personal goal, but rather should articulate how you will add value to your workplace setting, industry, underserved segments of society, or society at large. Has your mission statement changed since the start of the term or has it changed as a result of what you have learned? Please explain why it has changed or how the course concepts reinforced your mission statement if it has not changed. Suggested word count: 200 – 500 words

(2) Discuss the reasons, motivations, and life events that have inspired your mission statement. For example, if your great aunt was an inspiring lawyer, what influence did she have on your outlook in life? Did you experience or witness an injustice that motivates you to want to be a change agent? What unique gifts and attributes do you have that enable you a make a difference in the manner you desire? This is where you tell me about your lived experience and how it informs what you want to do in your career. It is okay to tell me that you want to be an accountant, for example, because or parental pressure. However, I want to know if that’s what you want to do? If you are unsure of what kind of career you will find, that’s okay, too. However, let me know what paths you are considering or are open to pursuing – even if it’s absurd. You want to be a musician or athlete agent? Cool. Tell me more about it. I’m a safe audience. Feel free to include any classroom materials/discussions within this section.

(3) Pick two or more concepts/issues that we discussed in class – or concepts that are justifiably relevant to business and society – and relate it to your mission statement. Describe why they are important and how you feel you are best positioned to make a difference in addressing the issue. By dedicating effort to address this issue, what impact/implications does it have for your workplace? For your profession or industry? For society?

Suggested word count (sections 2 and 3 combined): 1300-1500 words
