1 Student Name IBA 135 – Fall 2021 Career Exploration Research Paper The major writing assignment in IBA 135 is a career exploration research paper. The paper has five major sections; each section requires a minimum of 1- 2 typed, double -spaced pages for a total of 7- 10 pages. In addition, you will prepare a Works Cited /References list that will conform to APA format. Please use the rubric as a guide. Your paper should begin with a short introductory paragraph that provides an overview of what you will discuss. Please make sure you use a traditional font (Times New Roman, 12 point) and indent paragraphs. There should be 1 -inch margins on all sides. Using headings throughout the paper will help you stay focused as you write. Acad emic essays should have a structure, be coherent, with logical progression throughout, and cohesive, with the different parts of the writing clearly connected. Part 1: Introduction: Self -Assessment In the introductory section of your paper, describe how you decided on this career for your research. You should explain how both your educational background and work history have informed this decision. Using the results of the Career Inventory (and any other career questionnaires / surveys / assessments that you have taken), why do you think this career is a match for your personality, abilities, interests and values. Though you will be writing about your personal experiences please make sure you maintain an academic writing style. Academic wr iting should use clear and precise language to ensure the reader understands the meaning (i.e., do not use slang or informal language). 2 Part 2: Employment Sector Data In this section, detail the education, certificates/licenses and skills necessary for a career in the employment sector that you have selected. Most of the information you will need can be found in the data bases included in the IBA 135 Research Guide. Remember to write down the sources that you use so that you can cite them in this section of your paper. An academic essay should include relevant examples, supporting evidence and information from academic texts or credible sources. Part 3: Job Option(s) in the Employment Sector for College Graduates You will need to either interview someone for this section of the essay or include information about the lived experience of someone in your career of interest (e.g., YouTube video). Imagine that you meet eligibility requirements for one or more positions based on your educational background (baccalaureate degree) and prior work experience. What might you anticipate if you accep ted a position (working conditions, schedule, salary, benefits, training, and opportunities for advancement)? If possible, interview someone employed in this field currently. What do they like and dislike about their job? What advice would they give you? If you do not have access to someone in your field, you could see if the Career Center could help you arrange to talk with a Lehman alumnus/alumna. You could also interview a faculty or staff member who has come from the employment sector that interests you. An informational interview (conducted in person (if the conditions are safe ), on the phone, or via email) can count as one of your five sources. Keep complete interview notes (or, with the individual’s permission, an audiotape) and make sure to get contact information (full name, official job title) since you will need it for your Works Cited list. Since you may want to include a specific quotation, make sure to indicate 3 direct quotations by using “quotation marks in your notes. ” Part 4: Job Outlook in the Employment Sector This section focuses on: What are some current issues as well as projected changes in this field? You will need to use something besides an online database to write this portion of the essay – you will need to find a book, professional journal, news article, or monograph that spells out challenges as well as opportunities (Farmer, 200 4) . Part 5: How I Can Prepare Myself for Success Outline the steps you will take including specifics on a choice of major, paid or unpaid work experiences, and extracurricular activities (clubs, organizations, honor societies, and service learning opportunities). How will you build a resume over the years you spend pursuing your undergraduate degree? You may decide to conduct an informational interview with an academic advisor, career counselor, student activities administrator, or faculty member to develop this part of your paper. However, you should not interview the same person you did before. The interview can be counted as one of your five sources. Keep complete interview notes (or, with the individual’s permission, an audiotape) and make sure to get contact information (full name, official job title) since you will need it for your Works Cited list. Since you may want to include a specific quotation, make sure to indicate direct quotations by using quotation marks in your notes. 4 References Part 6 is the References page. You will need at least five sources that you will paraphrase or quote in the text (using correct form for in -text citations). At the end of the paper, you will include a Works Cited /References list. A majority of your sources will be online databases, but at the very least I expect that you will read and make use of one book, book chapter, or professional journal article/monograph, or news article . Please make sure your references are in APA style. For example, all lines after the first line of each entry in your reference list should be indented one -half inch from the left margin. This is called hanging indentation. All authors’ names should be inverted (i.e., last names should be provided first). Authors’ first and middle names should be written as initials. Please check this site for additional inf ormation on how to format using APA style : https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_a nd_style_guide/ref erence_list_basic_rules.html Sample APA style references : (note indent, author style, capitalization, italics) Farmer, P. Elizabeth Liranzo IBA 135 OUTLINE: Career Exploration Research Paper – Career Choice = Special Education Teacher Part 3 – What might you anticipate if you accepted the position? Working Conditions Describe a typical day and any variations Everyday I set up the classroom along with making sure everything is all set for the lesson plans for the day. When students arrive, I make sure they get ready to learn, take necessary things out of their backpacks (ipads, lunchbox, etc) and check in to their schedule. Before each class starts, the students will check in and go to their individual schedules to mark they are present in that class. Each day I teach my students their core classes, Social Studies, ELA, Science, and Math. For every class I make sure to have a powerpoint, videos, and worksheets for the students to complete. Over the course of the day, I monitor the students’ behavior and progress in their academic goals. Variations can occur when there are students absent, if students don’t bring in their devices, if a student is off baseline and enacts in a behavior, if the internet does not cooperate that day, or if they are pulled out for a related service. Work Schedule Describe a typical day and any variations Everyday I come in about 7:30 AM. I prepare what is needed for the day. At 8:00 AM we have our daily meeting with all staff and students arrive shortly after for breakfast and the first period. I teach my students every other period and will take my AIS, lunch, or prep periods the times I’m not in the classroom. A variation in the day would be talking to related services, holding student clubs, providing coverage for when a teacher is absent, and partaking in school event/setting up for the event. The students will start bussing around 2:20/2:30 and work officially ends at 2:50. I typically will stay until about 3:30 to finish/wrap up any loose ends from the day. Salary & Benefits Average salary/what are the benefits generally associated with the job Average starting salary with your bachelor’s degree is around $57,000. If you have your master’s degree, then you starting salary is $63,000. Depending on your degrees and credits you have the ability to increase your salary based on how much education you received. Also, your pay increases each year. Being a part of the NYC DOE, you follow a salary step and can view how much you get paid by looking at the chart. Depending on your education and how many years of services affects how much you get paid. Benefits there are two options. One option is provided by the UFT (NYC teacher union) and the other you can pay for that is separate. You have access to dental, eye, health insurance, prescription drug, and hearing aid. We also have a pension! Training Available Certifications and other credentials I have a master’s degree in special education students with disabilities grades 1-6 with an annotation in severe and multiple disabilities including deafblind. I also have a certification in childhood education grades 1-6. Opportunities for Advancement How do you move along the career pathway? There are different options you can move along in this career. You are able to go back to school to receive other certifications in different (Bilingual teacher, 7-12 grade teacher, etc) I can also go back to school and partake in a program to become administration or principal one day. It depends on the areas you want become certified and if you would like to become part of administration one day. Sources: Alexa Bourous ( Special Education Teacher) Salary: https://www.uft.org/sites/default/files/attachments/Teachers%20Salary%20Schedule%20-%202018%20to%202021.pdf Benefits: https://www.uft.org/your-benefits/health-benefits/service-benefits Pension: https://www.uft.org/your-benefits/pension Part 4 – What are some current issues and projected changes? Current Issues Pandemic impacts? Some of the students this year haven’t been in school for almost two years which effects their education and behaviors. Students are using iPads and devices instead of writing things down and completing worksheets. Students have a hard time going on the iPads and watching YouTube videos instead of completing classwork. Students must maintain personal space, masks, and be apart from the other students. So, socialization has become an issue as well as their overall academic status. Diversity concerns? We have a wide range of students from different cultural backgrounds. The issue is the curriculum predominately focuses on white culture, instead of a variety of cultures which allows for a disconnect between the students and the curriculum. For example, when teaching social studies one year, I had a student ask me “why were all the leaders we were learning about are only white men. He asked how come there are no leaders that were women and no leaders that are Black, Chinese, Mexican, etc.” Projected Changes What does the future look like for this field? Due to the vaccination mandate, there were teachers that decided to not get the vaccine and not come back to work this year. Working through the pandemic, people realized how much teachers do and how much they are needed. We saw how negatively teaching remotely and being home affected our students compared to being in person at school. The different areas of socialization, friendships, leadership, academics, etc were greatly affected. I believe teachers will always be in demand and that hopefully the curriculum is more accessible for students with disabilities and becomes more inclusive for all learners.
