POST 1:

What stressors during middle adulthood might contribute to such a crisis?

Thinning or balding hair, graying hair, wrinkles, and the need for eyeglasses are all stressors during middle adulthood that might contribute to a crisis. Some cognitive changes can also occur such as a decline in intelligence. Losing a job can also be a stressor that leads to a crisis.

How might an individual’s multicultural identities affect the stressors experienced during middle adulthood? A person’s multicultural identity affect stressors experienced during middle adulthood by affecting the way they feel about aging. Some cultures embrace aging more than others. Depression is one of the most prevalent psychiatric diagnoses among the elderly, increasing morbidity, disability, and suicide risk (Seegert, 2013).

What types of preventative or protective behaviors could prevent the individual from experiencing a developmental crisis? Human services professionals can provide preventative or protective services such as counseling to prevent an individual from experiencing a developmental crisis (Argosy, 2017). Doing things like getting regular medical exams, exercising, and focusing on healthy nutrition are also some other preventative behaviors to prevent developmental crisis.

POST 2:

Midlife can best be conceptualized as a period of transition. Middle Adulthood is a stage where individuals undergo diverse changes in their physical, psychological, and psychosocial lives. People in Middle Adulthood experience both losses and gains. This development stage event can be negative or positive. Additionally, this developmental stage can produce more stress related issues as these individuals may be more cognizant of the changes in their physical appearance and declining health issues (argosy University, 2017).

We have all heard the term “midlife crisis” and I have enjoyed listening to some comical stories regarding people in midlife crisis. Culturally speaking, I have observed older men or men in their middle adulthood stage revert back to dressing younger, acting younger, and dating younger women. Some men purchase certain cars in hopes of alluring younger women. My culture refers to as a “midlife crisis.”The older men try to compete with younger men for the attention and affection of younger women and it is not age appropriate. One reason men behave this way is because they are feeling the effects of aging. They may have medical issues, problems with weight gain, and hair loss. These physical changes can be challenging to men and cause depression or issues with self-esteem.

Some of the stressors associated with middle adulthood issues are returning adult children to the home, providing for adult children who have not left home, marital issues, health problems, and caring for aging parents. Individuals experiencing middle adulthood usually have multiple layers of responsibilities and these responsibilities can create stress. However, it is remiss not to mention that during this stage the cognitive abilities of individuals is increased and the ability to problem solve is excellent. In fact, studies show that the mental capabilities of people in middle adulthood actually increase and certain types of knowledge, such as practical knowledge increase markedly (Argosy University, 2017).

Middle adulthood individuals should exercise daily, eat nutritionally, and learn how to balance work and home. Taking a proactive stance can greatly improve an individual’s health and reduce the onset of some chronic diseases or conditions. People in middle adulthood should have regular doctor visits, watch their weight, and monitor their mental health. Equally important, establishing networks for mental health, physical health, and multicultural/crosscultural interaction is vital at this stage. Therefore, individuals should establish a network of support from their community, family, religious community, and friends. These support networks can help to alleviate or reduce stress triggers and make this development stage more pleasant and positive.
