Example of Working outline (self-Introduction Speech)

General Purpose: To inform

Specific Purpose: To inform my classmates about what has made me who I am.

Introduction: Have you ever thought about what made you? I have. My name is Jennafer, and I would like to tell you a little bit about the things that have made me who I am. When I look back, I realize that being from a small desert town, growing up next door to my grandparents, and deciding to get an education all to make me who I am (this is the thesis).

[Transition: The first thing that shaped me was growing up where I did.]

Body

  1. I grew up in a small desert town.
  2. I knew many people in this small desert town, which made me value the community.
  3. Those of you who grew up in the desert know how hot it can be, so I learned to love warm, dry weather and to hate being cold.
  4. I also don’t think many people can say they grew up with dirt roads.

[Transition: Another thing that shaped me was spending lots of time with my grandparents]

  1. I lived next door to my grandparents growing up.
  2. My Grandma taught me to love reading and to bite my tongue and think before you speak.
  3. My Grandpa was a mechanic who taught me to be curious about how things work.
  4. Not many people get to spend so much time with their grandparents, and I value the lessons I learned.

[Transition: Lastly, education is an essential piece in the puzzle that is me]

  1. Like you, I was a student at Barstow Community College, where I received my Associates in Humanities.
  2. After getting my degree from Barstow, I transferred to the University of California Riverside, where I studied theatre and discovered I didn’t want to be an actor.
  3. When I decided to go to graduate school, I choose California State University.

[Transition: So today, I have given you a little insight into who I am.]

Conclusion: As you can see, there have been many influences in my life that have made me who I am today. There are even more, but I can only fit so much into two minutes. What I will say is that who I am is looking forward to getting every one of you.
