For the Literature Review, you will select an issue or controversial topic in your discipline or future career, and you will examine this issue through scholarly and non-scholarly, credible research. Try to select a topic that you may be unfamiliar with, so that you learn about your topic. Extensive research from at least 5 scholarly sources will help you to explore your topic. You will likely have at least 5 additional, credible sources, but you may have as many additional sources as you wish. It will also be necessary for you to state your own opinions on the topic, though do not write in first person. Your Literature Review should be written in the third person perspective. The purpose of this Literature Review is to help you practice the conventions of academic writing in your discipline and meet the expectations of scholarly discourse in your field. THIS PROJECT WILL BE BROKEN UP INTO SEVERAL PARTS: PROPOSAL, ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY, FINAL DRAFT FINISHED PRODUCT. 1) The Proposal – You should be able to respond to the following questions: What is the central research problem (controversial topic)? What is the topic of study related to that problem? What methods should be used to analyze the research problem? Why is this important research, and why should someone be reading the proposal care about the outcomes from the study? This Proposal will be approximately 1-2 pages in length. It is also important to be able to provide some background to the issue. Connected to the background and significance of your study is a more deliberate review and synthesis of prior studies related to the research problem under investigation. The purpose here is to place your project within the larger whole of what is currently being explored, while demonstrating to your readers that your work is original and innovative. Think about what questions other researchers have asked, what methods they have used, and what is your understanding of their findings. Assess what you believe is still missing, and state how previous research has failed to examine the issue that your study addresses. 2) The Annotated Bibliography – You will write an annotated bibliography, which will help in the completion of your final project. The annotated bibliography requires you to assemble a list of at least 8 credible sources that you may potentially use in the final research essay. For each annotation, you will summarize the source information, evaluate its overall credibility, and state how it will help support your exploration of the research question. Your completed document should apply either APA or MLA standards.
