Design Project (LRC) – Network Design Scenario Overview Arkham Technology Corporation – a medium-size semiconductor distributor, headquartered in Austin, Texas, manages its sales force through regional sales offices that are set up throughout the country. Each of these offices supports a number of sales representatives and technical support engineers, as well as a small number of management staff. The company has decided to expand its southern operation for east coast business and has chosen Atlanta, Georgia for a new regional office and support center and has acquired a two-building facility for this purpose. Atlanta LAN The first building is a 4680 sq. ft., two-floor office space with three closed offices, an electronics closet, a storage room, an open room for a technical lab, and reception foyer on the first floor, and an open bay area on the second floor which will house a prototype design center, fitted with test stations, work benches, and some fabrication equipment. The second floor will produce a lot of EMI and RFI, so they’ve requested fiber to the desktop/laptop. The second building contains two large warehousing and storage spaces that Arkham will use for product distribution. There is a need to have logistics terminals in these spaces for inventory management, which will connect to the Arkham ERP system. There are also four small office suites that are not part of Arkham in the building. Equipment connection is in the northwest corner of the large storage room. Arkham Technology has released a Request for Proposal, or RFP (this project with materials) and your project team will represent a contractor firm bidding on the work. You will provide a parts-only costing plan for the networking hardware itself; do not factor in labor rates with this project as it is outside the scope of your proposal. Due to the perceived sensitivity of corporate proprietary information and potentials for corporate espionage, the Vice President of Sales has specifically requested that the office not be outfitted with wireless networking, unless they can be convinced their data will be secured. WAN Interconnection Additionally, Arkham would like to interconnect their WAN and expand as well: Austin is the corporate HQ of the company. They connect to the Internet using a fiber optic circuit, provisioned by the local cable company, presently. Atlanta’s internet is handled through a business class DSL circuit from the local phone company. Atlanta must connect to Austin, as Atlanta will be backing up their data every other night across the network to a disaster recovery and storage SAN in Austin. They also will be using the link for general operations, such as e-mail, file sharing, and Active Directory and database replication. A regional sales and support facility (very similar to Atlanta) is going online in Scottsdale, Arizona. While the office is already online, Scottsdale would like to leverage its business-class broadband cable link to the internet, as well as the other offices. Specific Requirements All machines will have access to the Internet. Extend connectivity to the cube farms so that each cube is capable of one computer system. Extend connectivity so that each hard office has connectivity for two wired devices on the network. The development lab must be wired separately from the sales, support, and management machines, but also must have access to the Internet. The development lab must have network connectivity for at least four computer testing systems and one development server. The office requires three department-level network printers for office printing. These printers must be dispersed throughout the office so as to provide the good printing coverage throughout the office. These printers will be provided by Arkham’s IT department; they do not need to be put into your proposal. All connectivity will be wall mounted on the client side and concentrated to the electronics closet. The electronics closet will make use patch panels, rather than connecting modular jacks to the actual infrastructure wiring. Do not price out any computers for the staff, nor price the servers. Each staff member will have a dockable laptop computer for their use. Additionally, Arkham’s IT department will furnish three, rack-mountable, 1U servers. Your team must also price out the equipment rack. Atlanta building 1, floor 2 will produce a high amount of EMI and RFI, so they are requesting fiber connectivity to the desktop. Do not price any NIC’s however; Arkham IT will price those out and issue them to the staff. All connectivity will be wall mounted on the client side and concentrated to the electronics closet. The electronics closet will make use patch panels, rather than connecting modular jacks to the actual infrastructure wiring. Deliverable Your will put together a composite project consisting of several documents and pieces. Physical Network Maps – These maps will show the locations of physical wiring, devices, and nodes. Each location will have its own physical network map. Logical Network Maps – These maps will show the logical layout of the network, including devices and nodes. You’ll produce a logical map for each location as well as one for the WAN. Part Rollup Spreadsheet – This spreadsheet will outline a complete manifest of parts used in this project with quantity and cost for each part type. Be sure to specify an item description, model number, manufacturer, supplier, model number, unit cost, and quantity, if available. Use formulas in Excel to do cost calculations for a sub-total as well as a grand total for the project. An example spreadsheet template is provided as part of this project to help you. Justification Document – This document will outline justifications for all parts selected and provide any notes regarding the deployment of the network. Here you will describe the rationale for why you selected a certain component. For example, if you select Category 6 Unshielded Twisted Pair cable, specify why you chose CAT6 as opposed to CAT5e, for example. As long as your justification rationale is reasonable and plausible, it will be accepted. PowerPoint Presentation – Your team will present a short 7-10 minute overview of your proposal to the Chief Information Officer of Arkham Technologies (role played by your humble, yet over-caffeinated instructor). In this presentation, you will illustrate your approach and significant hardware put into use. Each person will participate in the presentation, delivering their piece(s) in turn. Project Work Breakdown – You will provide a synopsis of who did what with your project. Individual grades for the project may be directly affected by how much you as a student participated in the project. Peer Review – As an individual, you will provide a separate deliverable in the form of an e-mail that will detail your experiences with the project.
