Gita Worksheet Books V – IX INSTRUCTIONS: DOWNLOAD THIS WORKSHEET AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS CONTAINED HEREIN. WHEN YOU SUBMIT YOUR EXAM, ALSO SUBMIT THIS WORKSHEET. THE WORKSHEETS ACCOUNT FOR 1/3 OF YOUR EXAM GRADE. Book V In Book IV, Krishna praises the “renunciation of works” as a path to Union. In Book V, what does Krishna tell Arjuna is “the more excellent” way to Union? Who does Krishna say “wins perfect peace?” Book VI When does Krishna say one gets called to Union? Krishna warns that Union is “not for” one particular type of person, that this person is excluded from Union. What kind of person is Union “not for?” Book VII List the Eightfold Nature of Krishna’s divisions. What (or who) does Krishna say is the “supreme eternal?” According to Krishna, what must one say to enter the Highest Way? Book IX BRIEF DISCUSSION: In a one or two well considered paragraphs, explain what Krishna says is the secret wisdom. How does this secret wisdom Krishna shares with Arjuna compare to the Abrahamic faiths? (HINT: Krishna’s secret bears a lot in common with the faith of Abraham.) INSTRUCTIONS: In a Microsoft Word .doc file, answer each of the following three questions in essay format (as three separate essays. These do not have to be ONE long essay!). Be sure to cite your answers and defend them with examples from the text.     Looking at the “Character List” distributed to the class, note the 8 common archetypes that Joseph Campbell discusses. Complete the matrix for Epic of Gilgamesh, listing each character who fulfills each of the 8 roles. Once you’ve completed the matrix for Gilgamesh, then select ONE of the films/stories we discussed in discussions and missives — NOT Star Wars, Harry Potter, or The Matrix!! — (Think Iron Man, the romComs, the tragedies…anything other than the three I already did).  Assign the appropriate role/position to two characters from that film/story and then Compare and contrast the roles each play. How are they similar? How are they different? Be sure to support your answers using examples from the text (Gilgamesh) and the source material (movie or books) for the second film. HINT: this will be longer than a paragraph but shorter than a long-form essay. (Think a half-page-ish.)   In The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell identifies seventeen stages of the hero’s journey. List out the steps of the Hero’s Journey as he’s outlined them, and identify those stages in Gilgamesh, citing specific scenes/passages from the text. (HINT: The “circle” graphic we discussed on the first couple of days of class and/or the “list” of steps in the Table of Contents is the outline of the journey. SECOND HINT: there are line numbers listed in the margin of your text. Use those to cite your passages. E.g. “Crossing the Threshold, Page 80, Line 45” is how the answer would look. AND THAT IS NOT THE ANSWER.)    In two or three well-considered paragraphs, discuss the Hero’s Journey as it relates to “real” life development. Why does the journey speak to us on such a deep level? Cite specific examples and/or passages from The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Chapters 1-3.  Part I: The Gita and the “Journey” In an essay of no more than 1,000 words, apply the hero’s journey, identifying all of the relevant steps of the journey. Address the following in particular: Does the Gitameet all the steps? Are they in the “right” order as prescribed by Prof. Campbell? Why do you think they are or are not? HINT: Not all journeys are *external*. Part II: Obtain one of the following films to view, then apply the stages of the Hero’s Journey to that film.  – Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom- Star Trek: Into Darkness- Princess Diaries- Tucker and Dale vs. Evil- The Shape of WaterAfter viewing the film, answer the following questions in an essay of at least 1,500 words. Does the film mostly comply with the hero’s journey? How does it vary? Why do you think the director chose to vary the film in these ways? Does the hero complete the entire journey, or is the film focused on a single element of the journey or a portion of the journey? What are the limitations the film has because it either complies fully with or fails to comply fully with the hero’s journey?
