Designing an Experimental Analysis
You are the BCBA assigned to consult with ABC Elementary School. The teacher shared her concerns on Ayesha’s stereotypy, off-task, and crying behavior. Below is the sequence of events observed.
The teacher instructed the class to take out their independent book and to read for 15 minutes. Ayesha engaged in independent reading appropriately. After 15 minutes had elapsed, the instructor asked the class to take out and complete the math worksheet from the independent work packet. Ayesha was observed to engage in hand flapping. The teacher then walked over to Ayesha and asked her if she needed help with the math work. Ayesha responded “no”. Ayesha continued to engage in hand flapping and not do her work. At this point, the teacher went over to Ayesha and took the math packet away and said, “You can complete the worksheet when you are ready to work.” After the teacher took the math worksheet away, Ayesha took her book out to read.
At lunch and recess, you observed Ayesha playing and interacting with her peers appropriately. After lunch, the class went to the library. The librarian asked the class to sit at the circle rug for story time. Ayesha sat appropriately and raised her hand to answer questions during circle time. She appeared engaged by orienting her head and body towards the librarian and speakers. After story time, the class had time to pick a new book for the week. The librarian asked the class to be quiet while searching for a book. Ayesha looked at several books and walked around before picking a book to check out. Inappropriate behaviors were not observed during library time.
After library, the class worked on a craft project. Ayesha was observed engaging in appropriate behaviors finishing up her craft activity. The next period observed was science. Ayesha engaged in hand flapping when the teacher asked the class to complete the unit self-assessment. The teacher redirected Ayesha to continue working on the assessment on several occasions. Ayesha also engaged in conversations with peers during this time which caused disruption to the peers. The teacher removed the science assessment and Ayesha took her book out to read. Ayesha engaged in appropriate independent reading while the rest of the class completed the self-assessment. Ayesha also engaged in off-task and disruptive behaviors when the teacher conducted a lesson in science class. The teacher redirected Ayesha to stop engaging in the inappropriate behavior each time.
After science, the teacher instructed the class to put away their science folder and book and line up for gym. Ayesha cooperated with the transition. In gym class, Ayesha engaged in appropriate turn-taking and conversational skills with peers. She followed all the teacher’s instruction.
The teacher provided some free time to the class before dismissal. Ayesha played a card game with several peers. She also read a few pages of her book. Ayesha cooperated with the teacher’s instruction for packing up and dismissal.
You conducted several days of observation and saw the repeated patterns of behavior.
