Week 1

  • Interventions in ABA

You are a BCBA supervising a home-based ABA program. Your client’s mother comes to you in tears because her child abruptly flops on the ground every time they go out in public. The entire family is affected, as they can no longer go on any social outings with your client. You realize this behavior may require an intervention. As the supervising BCBA, what would you do?

This week, we will discuss several basic techniques to promote skill acquisition and decrease undesired behavior. You will learn about positive and negative reinforcement procedures to strengthen behavior. You will also learn how to contrive motivating operations and discriminative stimuli to encourage desirable behavior and decrease the likelihood of undesirable behavior. We will cover pairing procedures or what may be better described as developing rapport with your clients. Procedures for establishing and using conditioned reinforcers and using stimulus and response prompts to teach new behaviors will be addressed as well.

    TO DO LIST

For this week’s discussion, share an example of a teaching procedure related to prompting or transfer of stimulus control, including the steps involved in utilizing the prompt and how it would ultimately be faded.

  • Quiz Overview

This quiz will assess your understanding of the topics covered in the Week 1 readings.

  • What You Need to Know

    Interventions in ABA

Teaching is a critical part of applied behavior analysis (ABA). Behavioral interventions can help create conditions conducive to teaching. The Week 1 readings will expand your knowledge on the principles of reinforcement, and you will learn more about prompting and transferring stimulus control, which will be critical strategies utilized in teaching procedures.

    Instructional Activities

This week you will complete instructional activities through your participation in ICS, a quiz, and formative multimedia activities. The BCBA/BCaBA Task List (5th ed.) elements that will be covered during these activities include:

    • G-01: Use positive and negative reinforcement procedures to strengthen behavior.
    • G-02: Use interventions based on motivating operations and discriminative stimuli.
    • G-03: Establish and use conditioned reinforcers.
    • G-04: Use stimulus and response prompts and fading (such as errorless, most-to-least, least-to-most, prompt delay, and stimulus fading).

    Capella Compassion Code

You may be directed to reflect on a section of the Capella Compassion Code in your ICS this week. Please remember to add any notes you find useful as you dive further into this code.

  • Interactive Learning Module: ABA Case Study Interventions: Intervention Strategies

In this activity, you will read a scenario and create a sample behavior intervention plan from a list of options.

Note: Although you will not receive a grade for this activity, you must complete it to pass the course.

Follow the practices in the ABA Media Best Practices [DOCX] guide to have the best possible experience with the media and ensure you get credit for this activity.

  • Interactive Learning Module: ABA Terminology Flashcards – Week 1

Each week, you are provided with resources to help you study and practice behavior analysis terminology. Mastering the terminology during your program will provide you with a solid foundation for developing examples of these terms and ultimately for practical application in the field.

This media will help you master your knowledge of the terms used this week.

Note: This media piece is included in your required instructional activities. Although you will not receive a grade for this activity, you must complete it to pass the course. You must answer each question correctly to receive credit for this activity.

Follow the practices in the ABA Media Best Practices [DOCX] guide to have the best possible experience with the media and to ensure you get credit for this activity.

  • Prepare: Assignment Review

Developing intervention plans is one of the most basic and important tasks for a behavior analyst. In this course, you will complete five assignments, each of which will be one piece in the development of a full intervention plan. You will recommend intervention goals based on client preferences, supporting environments, risks, constraints, and social validity. You will also design research-based interventions based on the principles of ABA and develop a plan to measure, generalize, and maintain intervention strategies. The five assignments are as follows:

    1. Week 2: Target Behavior and Outcome Criteria Definition.
      • For this assignment, you will use the case study and target behavior you developed for PSY7712. The behavior you identify for change must have social significance to the subject or subjects and be relevant to the quality of their daily lives. Once the behavior has been identified, it must be defined in observable, clear, objective, and measurable terms. In addition to defining the target behavior, you must identify and explain the outcome criteria for changing the behavior. The criteria must be tied to the social significance of the behavior and established before intervention efforts can begin.
    2. Week 5: Literature Review.
      • For the second assignment, you will examine nine peer-reviewed journal articles related to antecedent-based interventions, consequence-based interventions, and replacement-based interventions. You will identify common ABA concepts, principles, and methods used in the studies. Your literature review should provide the theoretical foundation for the strategies you are using in your Intervention Support Plan.
    3. Week 6: Measurement, Data Display, and Data-Based Decisions.
      • You will communicate the behavioral data available in your case study through graphic displays.
    4. Week 8: Intervention Support Plan.
      • You will create your intervention plan for the behavior change needed in your case study.
    5. Week 9: Caregiver Quick Reference Guide.
      • The objective of this assignment is to summarize the material you have developed in layperson’s terms so a caregiver or significant other could easily understand and use the material.

Take some time early in the course to read the instructions and the scoring guides to learn the requirements for your assignments.

    ABA Research Guide

To help you with any research related to these assignments, the Capella University Library has prepared this Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Research Guide. This ABA-specific research guide can help you select appropriate topics for assignments, search psychology databases, evaluate sources, search within professional journals, and find direct links to professional organization and association websites.

ICSs are not graded, but you must attend and participate in seven of the 10 sessions to pass the course. Participation is defined as:

    • Attending ICS by phone or Zoom.
    • Actively providing spoken or written input during ICS.
    • Responding to the ASRs through polls in Zoom.
    • Being available if code words are given out by your instructor.

It is strongly recommended that you view the recordings of any missed sessions to ensure that you are fully apprised of any important details of assignments, discussion posts, or other assigned work that may have been provided.

  • Write Your Discussion Post

    Prompting and Transferring Stimulus Control

In this week’s readings, you learned about advanced teaching procedures using prompting and transferring of stimulus control. For this discussion, please write about a teaching procedure you use or imagine a teaching procedure in which prompting and transfer of stimulus control is utilized. Please walk us through the steps involved in utilizing the prompt, and how it would ultimately be faded.

    Response Guidelines

Read the posts of your peers and respond to one. Your response should be substantive and demonstrate your understanding of the material. Which aspects of the post do you like or agree with? Are there areas that are unclear? Did the post spark questions that you would like to ask your peer? Be sure to keep your tone scholarly, respectful, and professional in all courseroom posts.
