Week 2

  • Review of the Literature

    Review of Literature

Reviewing the scholarly literature has always been a challenge for Tiana. She has not been able to find a good method for evaluating, sorting, and organizing the information required to construct a proper literature review. She also gets tripped up on which articles are qualitative and which are quantitative.

Jordan and James remind her that qualitative research is in-depth interview-based research that explores participants’ experiences, while quantitative research focuses on statistical relationships between variables. They also let her know there are some great tools and resources she can use that will really help her with the literature review.

Week 2 provides content that offers guidance on the various ways that literature can be organized. The assignment next week provides a practical opportunity to apply research skills to a literature research matrix. Tiana’s eager!

    TO DO LIST:

    • Set-Up Yellowdig: Set up your Yellowdig account by accessing the “Set-up Yellowdig account” button in Week 1.
    • Discussion: Share with classmates what interests you most about identifying research, or other content from this week.
    • Quiz: Take the quiz.
    • What You Need to Know: Learn about reviewing the literature.
    • Prepare: Become familiar with library tips and using the CASP tool to evaluate articles.
  • Set-Up Yellowdig

This courses uses Yellowdig for all discussion assignments. If you have not already, you must visit the “Set-Up Yellowdig Account” link in Week 1 at least once to ensure your Yellowdig discussion activity syncs with the course’s gradebook. All learners, regardless of previous experience with Yellowdig, must complete this step to automatically receive a discussion grade. Once you access through the Set-Up link, grade sync will establish within 24 hours.

  • Discussion Overview

Each discussion in this course has a couple of questions that may ask you to apply your readings, use new skills, identify additional outside sources, reflect on how content applies to you, or give you an opportunity to talk about what interests you most. You may choose one to respond to each week or you could post your own content related to the concept for the week.

  • Quiz Overview

Take the multiple-choice quiz to gauge your understanding of the material presented in Week 2.

  • What You Need to Know

    Readings and Multimedia

    • Use your Creswell and Creswell text, Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches, to read the following:
      • Chapter 2, “Review of the Literature,” pages 23-47.
    • Read the following articles:
    • Watch the following media piece:
    • The Course Study Guide [PDF] highlights content to focus on as you read and absorb the materials. You may also find some additional articles with direct relevance to your field in the guide.
  • Prepare: Library Tips and Using the CASP Tool to Evaluate Articles

The discussion questions throughout this course are aimed at prompting a conversation about an area covered in the week’s readings. You may prefer to choose articles that support the topic or highlight a point(s) you are making, to make for a more meaningful discussion.

To prepare for discussions in this course:

    • Locate and examine the research guide for your area of study from the Program Library Research Guides. Library guides provide a range of links to resources on research-related skills, including how to find articles in the library, statistical websites, and professional organizations.
    • Visit the Reviewing the Literature page on Campus. This online handbook can help you develop essential research skills. Be sure to read through the sections, which offer advice on approaching literature methodologically.
    • Use the Capella University Library to search for research articles.
    • Refer to the Search by Methodology library guide for specific tips on searching by methodology type if you are looking for research articles that reflect a particular methodology,
    • Include the persistent link so your fellow learners can access it and benefit from your knowledge sharing when including an article in your post. You can find the persistent link for each article within the library databases. The persistent link is different from the URL in the browser window. Use the Persistent Links and DOIs guide to learn where to locate the library articles’ persistent links.
    • Try using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) Tool [PDF] as you find articles. It will help you to evaluate their quality and improve your skills as a consumer of research.
  • Write Your Discussion Post

For help using Yellowdig, please see Using Yellowdig [PDF] or Grading in Yellowdig [PDF]. Or visit Yellowdig Forums, Capella’s Campus support page for Yellowdig, with links for technical support.

Begin practicing the use of APA style for citations and references. All information that is not your opinion or experience should have a citation to show the reader where the fact came from and then a reference at the end of the post.

    Discussion Question

This week is about reviewing key literature researchers have published on a particular topic to help identify what direction future research can and should take. Please post something to the discussion board related to the content covered this week.

Note: Do not create your post as a reply to the pinned post. Instead, use Yellowdig’s Create option to create a new post. Label your post with the hashtag for the week (#Week2) so that others can sort posts by the week’s topic.

Here are some ideas for your post to get you started:

    • Discuss your personal preference of organizing sources during a literature review: literature matrix or map? What aspects of either approach do you find helpful?
    • After completing the readings for this week, share which reading most interested you or you felt was most immediately relevant to your own professional or academic career.

    Response Guidelines

As you respond to your classmates, share your experiences and anecdotal feedback regarding their posts. How have your personal experiences resonated with their ideas? What can you add to their ideas, building upon the connections you have made to the material so far? Consider exploring the features of Yellowdig, such as your ability to embed videos and pictures, create polls and videos, use hashtags, love or like a post, and so on.

    GO TO YELLOWDIG DISCUSSION BOARD
