We learned about three types of scale this week: fractional (ratio) , verbal (written) and graphic. This lab will give you practice using each of these scales. How to use fractional map scale to determine Earth distance: 1. Use a ruler to measure the distance on the map. This is your “map distance.” 2. Multiply the map distance by the denominator of the fractional scale, or “earth distance.” This will give you the distance of your map distance in real life using the units you used for your initial measurement. 3. Convert your map distance to a useful unit. Some useful conversions to remember: • Centimeters to meters, divide by 100 • Centimeters to kilometers, divide by 100,000 • Inches to feet, divide by 12 • Inches to miles, divide by 63,360 Exercises 1.
