Classmate 1 McQuay, Juanita

The AFL-CIO, Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and Labor-Management Employment Relations Association (LERA) serve and influence labor-management relations in a different way. To begin, in 1955 The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations merged together and became what is known as the AFL-CIO (Adler, 2006). The AFL-CIO fights for the “social and economic justice of over 12.5 million working people and consists of 55 national and international labor unions (AFL-CIO, n.d.). According to the AFL-CIO, their purpose is to fight for equality and safety in the workplace and to ensure that working people receive fair wages and benefits and are treated with dignity. Moreover, they give people a voice in the workplace without fear of retaliation. (AFL-CIO, n.d.).

Next is the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). According to the SHRM website, this is the largest HR professional society in the world. For decades, the SHRM has provided services and resources to HR professionals and advanced the practice of human resource management (SHRM, n.d.). In addition, SHRM provides such services as education, certification, and advocacy (SHRM). In 2015, Vosburgh interviewed Henry Jackson, President, and CEO of SHRM (2015, p. 26), who stated that SHRM prepares HR professionals for success in “the business leadership position.”

Finally, the Labor-Management and Employment Relations Association (LERA). LERA is a single organization in which professionals interested in labor and employment relations can network, share ideas and “learn about new developments, issues, and practices in the field” (LERA, Advancing Workplace Relations). In conclusion, The influence each of these organizations has on labor-management relations is important because each provides one or more of the following; education, advocacy and/or support to different groups of people within the workforce.

classmate 2 Dickson, Morgan,

The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations were once two separate groups with very different ideologies about how to spread the labor movement and promote workers’ rights. They consist of a combination of professions from teachers and public employees to engineers and doctors, the organization was formed to represent the working class that does not have unions present in their companies (Boris, Grabelsky, Margolies & Reynolds, 2013). AFL-CIO states that they exist to represent the people who work and that they help protect the employee’s rights stated in The Constitution. They work together to negotiate employee wages, respect and equal opportunities as well as serving as a voice for the employee.

One of the examples that support the concept of Human Resource Management is The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) which had been formed keeping the concept of Human Resource Management in the center of its approach. It is the world’s largest Human Resource community which has professional service dominance in the field of HR, across more than 150 countries of the world. The Board of Directors of this society abides by the values the society believes in along with the achieving of the mission and vision statements, by formulating various policies and directives that prioritize the organization first before the personal interest of its members (Zappe, 2013). Ensuring of high levels of leadership and by the maintenance of integration in its services all across the globe, the Board of directors have been determined to play a committed role in the field of Human Resource Management.
