Surveys are useful tools for original data collection, but it is imperative that you develop clear, unbiased survey questions if you want to collect accurate and useful information. A variety of methods can be used for developing surveys. For instance, many surveys consist of both open-ended and closed questions. Open-ended questions allow respondents to answer in any way they see fit. It is then up to the researcher to find themes and commonalities in these answers. To answer closed questions, respondents must choose from a predetermined set of response categories.

In addition to open-ended and closed questions, many surveys also include filter and contingency questions. Filter questions instruct respondents to continue to the next question based on how they answered the filter question. For example, if you wanted to know how satisfied homeowners are with the services they are receiving from a city, you could include a filter question asking respondents if they are homeowners. Those who answer “yes” would be instructed to proceed to the next question, which would ask them how satisfied they are with city services. If they answered “no,” respondents would be instructed to skip to the next question and proceed with the remainder of the survey. Filter and contingency questions are great ways to create a subsample for further analysis.

The phrasing and sequencing of questions on surveys also have a major impact on the quality of the original data that is generated. Questions must be clear and response categories must match the questions. Questions are usually sequenced so that “easy to answer” questions (such as age, etc.) are at the beginning and more sensitive questions (such as income) are near the end. The more questions answered by a respondent, the more likely that respondent is to complete the survey.

As you can see, survey construction is a difficult task.

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Consider the program, problem, or policy you are using for your Final Project. Then, develop a 10-question survey that could be used to evaluate the program, problem, or policy in the organization you selected. The survey should include both open-ended and closed questions, and filter and contingency questions. The survey should be appropriate for the sample that you identified in Week 4.

Post a10-question survey that could be used to evaluate the program, problem, or policy in the organization you selected. Then, explain why this survey would elicit the most effective results for evaluating your organization’s program/problem.

Sampling Designs

New Harbor, Delaware and Sampling Designs: Mayor Samuel Taylor

I believe that simple random sampling will be appropriate for conducting a public opinion poll. A simple random sampling is a type of probability sampling where the researcher randomly chooses a subset of research participants from a population (Latpate et al., 2021). This means that every member has an equal chance of being selected.

A simple random sampling will be appropriate for conducting the public opinion poll because it is an unbiased approach to gather responses from the larger population. And as we all know; a biased sample might result in an incorrect conclusion about the entire population. A simple random sampling is also accurate and simple to use. However, it is very difficult to achieve in terms of money, effort, time. According to the background information, Mayor Taylor has strong support in the business community, and his campaign has raised a huge amount of money for his reelection bid. Which means that the mayor can raise the capital needed to conduct simple random sampling. To achieve the best results, Mayor Taylor will need to follow these four steps:

· Define the population: The mayor must ensure he has access to each individual of the population so that he can collect data from everyone who is selected for the sample.

· Decide on the sample size: Mayor Taylor will need to decide how big or small the sample size will be.

· Select the sample: The mayor can use either the random number method or the lotter method to select the sample.

· Collect data from the sample: To ensure the validity of the findings, every individual selected should participate in the study.

Organization description

For my assignment, I will evaluate poor working conditions at Amazon. Amazon is an internet retailer offering a broad selection of products to its customers. Amazon is the leading e-commerce retailer globally serving millions of customers on daily basis. The company has many sellers on its e-commerce website that list their products for sale making it possible for customers to have access to a wide range of products (CNN Business, n.d.). Amazon is responsible for inventory management and ensures that all its fulfillment centers have enough products to meet consumer survives. The success of Amazon is attributed to its excellent customer services. Amazon offers 24 hours delivery and also charges low prices on its products because of economies of scale. This makes it possible for the company to attract many customers. In addition, the company invests in technology and innovation to ensure that it meets consumer needs.

Problem description

However, Amazon has placed more emphasis on customer service and forgot to do the same on its employees. Amazon employees have on several occasions complained about poor working conditions in the fulfillment centers and warehouses (Chan, 2021). Employees have complained of long working hours without any break and unrealistic targets that are hard to achieve. The reason why Amazon mistreats employees at the lowest positions is because it does not require much experience to work in a warehouse, and thus it can replace employees who leave work with ease. Truck drivers have also been complaining of long driving hours without sleep, putting their lives at danger because of fatigue (Chan, 2021). Amazon may not see the negative side of poor employee treatment at the moment because it stills makes profits and the business is doing well. However, there are high chances that poor employee treatment may end up negatively impacting its brand reputation in the long run. Amazon needs to engage in research to evaluate how the complaints by employees may impact the brand image of the company.

Research questions

The following questions can help Amazon to analyze its current problem regarding employee mistreatment in workplace;

1. What the impacts of employees’ complains regarding poor working conditions to the reputation of the company?

2. How does high turnover resulting from poor working conditions affect the overall operations and revenues of the company?

3. Perceptions of customers towards Amazon’s reputation.

Evaluation design for the problem

Amazon needs to collect data regarding employees’ perception towards the working environment of the company. To achieve this, the company can use anonymous questionnaires to collect information from employees across all levels of the organizational hierarchy. The company will then use the information to implement changes based on the research findings. In addition, the company will conduct surveys to gather information from customers about their perception towards the company’s brand image. If majority of the customers have a negative attitude towards Amazon based on its employee treatment, the company will thus need to focus on improving employee working conditions based on their complaints (Training Evaluation Framework and Tools, n.d.). After implementation of the changes, Amazon can evaluate its revenues, sales, turnover rates to understand if the problem had a significant impact to the company. However, this is a process that would take almost a year to evaluate its effectiveness. If the evaluation outcomes are consistency across all variables measured, then the evaluation will be reliable and valid.
