Middle-range theories are useful in research contexts because they link broad grand theories and particular empirical facts. Internal criticism is the assessment of a middle-range theory’s fundamental shortcomings. The process examines the theory’s inherent coherence and consistency by carefully considering the logic, ideas, assumptions, and arguments (Khan, 2023). Examining the logical structure of the theoretical framework is a crucial component of internal critique. This approach includes determining if the theory is consistent with the facts and body of knowledge already in existence and whether its conceptual and empirical statements make sense.



Furthermore, examining the underlying assumptions of the middle-range theory is essential for internal critique. In order to ensure the internal coherence of the theory, it is necessary to assess the validity and applicability of these assumptions (Damschroder et al., 2022). Another aspect of internal critique is evaluating whether ideas in the middle-range theory are precisely defined and operationalized. Concepts that are too abstract or ambiguous hinder the theory’s applicability in research.

External criticism entails determining if the theory applies to various situations and people and whether it accurately depicts the actual world it aims to describe. The theory’s ability to provide testable predictions and hypotheses that coincide with actual findings is also examined via external critique (Langtree et al.,2019). Analyzing actual data confirming or disputing the middle-range hypothesis is crucial to external criticism. This method entails evaluating the standard and strength of the research that has already been done to support the theory and figuring out whether or not the results match the predictions of the theory.

In addition, assessing the theory’s applicability in real-world settings and its possible influence on medical practice or policy formation constitutes external critique (Langtree et al., 2019). Internal criticism makes that the hypothesis makes sense, is reliable, and fits in with what is already known. It evaluates the theory’s assumptions, conceptual coherence, and internal organization. A theory is weak and less useful for study if it lacks internal consistency. By examining the theory’s empirical support and generalizability, external critique, on the other hand, proves the theory’s external validity.

The theory’s practical usefulness may be evaluated by considering its possible consequences for clinical practice and policy development, which can be determined with external criticism(Damschroder et al., 2022). Researchers may steer clear of such problems and make sure they are using solid and relevant middle-range theories in their study by combining internal and external critiques. These assessments raise the value and significance of nursing research by offering a means of upholding the standard, reliability, and relevance of middle-range theories.
