• Geog 301  Page 3 of 3 KEY Time Zones To reduce confusion, countries of the world have developed a system of time zones, whereby everyone in a certain area agrees to be on the same time. Generally, a time zone is an area approx. 15 of longitude wide centered on a controlling meridian. It is only at the controlling meridian that solar noon = clock noon. The controlling meridian for the Pacific Time Zone is 120W, which means that it includes approx. 7½  east and west of the controlling meridian. It is in this manner that clocks in Sacramento are synchronized with clocks in San Francisco. Use the following guidelines (and the time zone map on page 3) to answer time zone questions. To determine the time at another location, begin with your start time/date and then: First, add or subtract the time zone difference in hours. Be sure to adjust the day of the week if you “cross over” midnight. Second, IF there is travel time involved, always add the travel time. Third, IF you cross the International Date Line heading toward the Americas (eastward), subtract one full day (-24hrs). If you cross the International Date Line heading toward Asia (westward), add one full day (+24hrs). Now you should have the correct time!
