ABORTION 1 Abortion Kamryn Keyes Columbia Southern University EH 1020 October 19, 2021 ABORTION 2 Abortion The courts have helped with rulings about the importance of understanding when to permit abortion and when not to among individual states that had previously banned abortion. For instance, the US Supreme Court case between Roe V Wade established that abortion was a constitutional right of the people and as such, it should not be taken away from the people ( Allsbrook & Ellmann, 2021 ). Roe V Wade formed the basis for understanding abortion as a constitutional right. This course case is further supplemented by the ruling from the case Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt which led to the court clarifying that courts should examine the evidence presented to them and try to balance the alleged benefits of a given restriction against real-world burdens that the restriction may impose (Nash, 2019). This means that the courts have established the need to understand the motivation behind the need for an abortion before either accepting or denying people access to the procedure. Abortion is a constitutional right of the people and denying them could infringe on their potential to protect the lives of women and grant them reproductive freedom and individual liberty ( Guenther, 2018; Megersa et al., 2020). Therefore, it is important to allow people access to abortion services because it is their constitutional right. The proponents of abortion further argue that abortion should not be banned because it is an essential healthcare service. Abortion is connected to most aspects of an individual’s life. Chae and colleagues (2017) link abortion to the personal, economic, social, and health aspects of individuals. Limiting abortion implied limiting the women of the ability to make their own decisions on their personal lives, social, and health-related decisions. For instance, limiting access to abortion denied women the ability to secure a future by delaying childbearing before having children. In fact, Donley, Chen, and Borrero (2020) argue that abortion is an essential health care ABORTION 3 service that should be provided even during the pandemic. Since abortion is an essential healthcare service and it allows women to have a say about their reproductive, social, personal, and health- related decisions, access to abortion services should not be limited. On the other hand, the opponents of abortion argue that abortion should be banned because it leads to the death of millions of potential infants yearly. As a result of this, most of the opponents of abortion argue that abortion should never be performed, but instead recommend that other strategies should be adopted in controlling early pregnancies and potential abortion. Guenther (2018) argues that banning abortion could help to protect millions of infants who are aborted on a daily basis. Reardon notes that abortion could even lead to instances of community stigmatization of those who undergo the procedure because they may suffer stereotyping in the community (Readon, 2018; Dönmez & Kısa, 2017). It is evidently important to note that more lives are lost through abortion of the unborn and thus there is some need to act to prevent it. Therefore, abortion should be banned in order to protect the lives of the unborn and to protect women from potential stereotyping in the community after an abortion ABORTION 4 References Allsbrook, J., F. & Ellmann, N.
