ASSIGNMENT:

Based from all these ads, are Americans spending their money frivolously in the 1920s? How so? Do the racist ads (below), compare to the 1920s ads ? How? Can you find ads today that are racial/ bigoted in any way? Explain.

Post WWI America was full of temporary (I repeat, temporary) fun and leisure, from 1920 to 1929. This era was known as the Roaring Twenties. Stock Market ‘gambling,’ purchasing luxuries, and banks loaning money with little regulations all led to the decline of the American economy- soon leading to the Great Depression. The prices of stocks steadily increased through the 1920s, going on a wild ride upward between 1926 and October of 1929. Stock prices went far beyond realistic values and had little basis in the health of the companies. However, it all came crashing in November, 1929.

This assignment focuses on two sets of advertisements from the early 1900s. Unlike the other ads of the 1920s, these advertisements portray African Americans in an inferior way. Although many of us today (most, not all, unfortunately) would be appalled at how African Americans were portrayed, Americans in the early 1920s regarded these ads as normal, and rather entertaining.

2 pages: MLA,

These advertisements from the 1920s give us the other side of society… the bigoted side. Exploiting blacks and demeaning them were popular AND NORMAL. Be sure to look at these ads… there will be a discussion on it next week…
