A popular doctrine in politics, often attributed to Machiavellil (although he never explicitly stated it as so), states that the “end justifies the means.” What does this mean? Should we accept this doctrine no matter what the end or the means? Why or why not?

Making choices in politics is not easy and making the “right” choices can be even more difficult.

How do leaders and governments determine what the right choices are? Why is it okay for the United States and Russia to have nuclear weapons but not North Korea and Iran? Do North Korea and Iran have the same right to defend themselves as the US and Russia with nuclear weapons? Why or why not. You may use outside resources for this assignment if you wish but they are not required. If you do use outside resources, please remember to cite properly and to include a works cited page.

3rd:

In 300-350 words, please respond to the following:

What do you think it means to pursue the good political life? Should we be looking it at from a realistic or idealistic perspective? or both? What kinds of things (philosophy, religion, science) do you think influence the good political life? Be sure to fully explain and support your position in your response.

This assignment does not require any outside sources but you may want to use them in your response. At a minimum, you should probably be using the Chapter 3 notes. 1. How does human nature affect our decision-making? Do you think world leaders take human nature into consideration when making decisions? Give a specific example either of a current or former leader where you think this is evident.

2. Do you think human beings are aggressive by nature and thus inclined towards war naturally or is aggression a learned behavior? Why or why not?

This assignment requires outside research.

Choose one of the following theorists: Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Rousseau, John Stuart Mill, or Karl Marx.

Find at least one ACADEMIC article (from the library databases) which discuss this theorist’s contributions to politics and government. There may be more than one contribution, and you can discuss as many as you want, but MUST have at least one.

In 300 – 350 words, please respond to the following:

What was this theorist’s major contribution(s) to politics and government? Even if it was a “negative” contribution, why is this still important? Do you agree or disagree with this theorist’s approach? Why or why not?

6th:

Do you believe there is a one “best” system of government (ie, Democracy, Socialism, Communism, etc)? Why do you think this particular form of government works best? Explain your view.

This assignment is purely opinion based and requires no outside research.

How do you feel about the term “American exceptionalism?” What does this term mean to you? Is this is an idea we should be promoting internationally? Why or why not?
