In order for true learning to take place, we must move beyond “knowledge” and pure cognitive understanding. We must be able to transfer the knowledge into tacit knowledge and behavioral change.
Emotional Intelligence
(EI or sometimes referred to as EQ rather than IQ). The objective of this assignment is to force you to look inward and communicate your understanding of the topic of EI. Leaders take action, and most importantly, they seek feedback continuously to improve their ability to lead. This project will help you to become more self-aware. We must work from the bottom up, recognizing and managing our own emotions (self awareness dimension below) before we can better understand and then manage emotions of others (social skills dimension below).

Be open and honest about your strengths and weaknesses.
Present a candid, in-depth, introspective self-analysis.
You will be challenged to change both cognitively as well as behaviorally in an effort to become a better leader. Although not part of this assignment, you are encouraged to
seek feedback from others
as to your EI competencies.

This paper is a self-assessment using Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence set of readings as the reference.

In a well-constructed paper, you are to present a candid, in-depth, introspective self-analysis. First, read the 3 posted articles by Goleman. Then, fill out the following self assessment to help you gauge your strengths and developmental needs (overall). (These 20 facets of EI are from the article “Leadership that gets results” by Goleman (2000) located in the table titled “Emotional Intelligence: A Primer”.) You will use this table below to focus on only two strengths (out of the 20) and two developmental needs for your write up.

From your list above, select 2 emotional competencies that you consider your strengths as well as 2 emotional competencies that you consider your weaknesses (or areas for improvement). For each of these 4 competencies (out of 20) you should discuss the following:

1. Explain your understanding of EQ / EI based on the readings and what it means to you. Help me to see your level of knowledge of the articles and readings.

2. Then, explain the competencies that describe your 2 strengths:

· Explain that competency from the articles, and interpret what the competency means (based on the readings) overlaying your own perception

· Do not simply reiterate what the articles say about the competency

· Discuss a personal experience dealing with the competency, providing concrete examples.

· Discuss how you might leverage your strength to help you become more effective, or how you need to “curtail” its demonstration in order to become more “rounded” in your performance.

· For example: “One of my strengths is empathy, which is… I always try to put myself in someone else’s shoes. For example, my co-worker recently said… and I chimed in with… While I am proficient at this skill with employees and co-workers, I do not utilize it enough with upper management. However, it seems that my other employee, X, takes advantage of my empathy… recently he… I need to be aware of how often I show empathy because…”

· Keep in mind that there can always be too much of a good thing. Show your balanced understanding of the strength and its potential limitations.

3. For each 2 developmental needs, also:

· Define and interpret the competency

· Provide examples

· For example: “One of my weaknesses is self-control and showing my annoyance. I show this relatively frequently often when I’m under stress. Recently, I was under a short deadline to develop a document for my manager. I only had two hours to finish the project. My printer was jamming and when I asked my assistant to help me, she told me I needed to put a larger stack of paper in the feeder. Also, she said we had no other printers available and that it would take a month to order one. I could feel my blood boiling. I snapped at her and told her that I didn’t have time for this and that I would simply print from another printer. I have a hard time masking my annoyance with others….”

In addition, discuss:

· What obstacles prevented you from developing this competency in the past?

· What obstacles do you anticipate in the future in your attempts to grow in this area?

· Establish SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely). Specify 2-
3 short-and long-term steps
to become more effective (during the course of this class and after).

· For example, if you are in an environment that causes undue stress, is there a way to improve your relationships (if a person is the root of the cause)?

· Do you need to leave the culture?

· What can you do to improve the culture?

· Do you need a mentor to help you maneuver through the company?

· Are you sure you are seeing your behaviors clearly, or do you need a coach?

· What would others say about your strengths and weaknesses?

· What specific behavioral approaches will you try? What will you do next time?

· What specific cognitive changes do you need to make? How can you look at things differently?

· Sometimes we need to seek articles and books to improve. What tips can you locate from other books? Are any of the concepts from class helpful? Simply “hoping” to change or wishing to change does not work.

· When / how will you know you have improved? Get creative!!!

The final paper (not including the appendix) should be 4-6 pages with 1.5 spacing Times Roman 12 pt. font.

Divide your paper into multiple sections (e.g., one for each competency) and use headings. For example, you may use the following types of sections or paragraphs for each of the total 4 competencies:

1) Integration of the readings / summary / introduction

2) Competency (strength) #1

a) Interpretation (from the articles and your own) and how it relates to you

b) Specific examples of your actions

c) How it has been leveraged in past as well as how you need to prevent its use in future. That is, can it be “too much of a good thing”?

c) How it has been leveraged past / future?

4) Developmental Need #1
