Please answer the questions listed below. You may structure your response however you choose, as long as all of the following questions are answered within it.

There is no page length for this assignment. Our expectation is that these assignments should be approximately 1.5-2 pages long. However, there is no penalty if the response does not correspond to this length.

Your responses should include specific examples from photographs and should address *at minimum four* of the photographs provided. In your responses, when you are writing about a particular photograph, please refer to the number (which can be found in the lower right hand side of the frame) of which photo you are discussing or please refer to the title of the photograph (which can be found listed after the name of the photographer at the top of the slide).

Questions to be answered:

  • How are people depicted in these photographs? What is communicated about their lives? How is this information communicated?
  • Do the photographs in this collection communicate the same information/same perspective about the Depression? What are some similarities across the photos and what are some key differences?
  • What do you think the photographers wanted their viewers to think about, to know, and/or to do after seeing these images? In other words, why do you think they took and published these particular photographs and what did they want to argue or communicate to viewers of these images?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of looking to photographs as primary sources? What kind of information can photographs provide that other sources cannot? What are the limitations of relying on photographs? How are photographs similar or different to other forms of visual culture (cartoons, paintings, posters, films)?

This assignment will be graded according to the following criteria:

  1. Does the assignment address all the questions posed?
  2. Does the assignment demonstrate a close, careful, and thoughtful reading of the primary sources?
  3. Does the assignment demonstrate a strong familiarity with course topics and themes?
  4. Are all the claims made in the assignment accurate?
  5. Does the assignment make sense? Are the ideas within it communicated clearly?
