Discussion: Values Consistent With Social Work Practice

While counseling clients, it can be tempting for social workers to rely on their own set of values and ethical principles. Although the intention here is a good one, social workers must remember that, when working, their values need to be consistent with those of social work practice. The video case study featuring Eboni is a good example of what kinds of consequences can arise when a social worker is led by a personal set of ethics and values. For this Discussion, watch the video about Eboni and consider how you would respond to her during this particularly difficult time in her life. Be sure to include what kinds of supports are available for a pregnant teen.

Post by SUNDAY 7pm NEW YORK TIME your answer to the following questions:

  • After watching the video about Eboni, describe her response to the situation in terms of her developmental stage. How would you, as a social worker, respond?
  • What do you think are the most important messages for Eboni to understand at this point in her life span?
  • Also, explain which concepts/values, consistent with social work practice, you would try to reinforce.
  • Be sure to include what kinds of supports are available for a pregnant teen.

When pieces of cloth are sewn together, you might have trouble discerning the individual pieces of cloth that make the final garment, but by looking carefully, you can find the seams. You may have experienced similar difficulty in the first week of this course when asked to explore the individual aspects of culture that combine to create your unique self-identity. Forms of oppression can come together often in almost imperceptible ways to form the complex environment in which you and your clients live and interact. To prepare: Consider this week’s resources that describe how religion intersects with other forms of oppression.

THE ASSIGNMENT

Chef Samuelson is ethnically Ethiopian but was adopted and raised by Swedish parents and grandparents from whom he learned Scandinavian cookery. What is known as International Fusion Cuisine includes components of two or more distinct cookery traditions. Some hail this development. Others bewail the loss of cultural integrity that they fear will occur if the fusions “crowd out” the original distinctions of the “less powerful” culture’s cuisine. Thus we have a political power struggle played out in cultural terms, in this case, food. Provide one solid, logical argument, based on the hegemony theory you have learned, in favor of EACH point of view. Provide one solid, logical rebuttal to each argument.
