Case study 2 “Mike”

Mike is a 74 year old man admitted to an inpatient psychiatric ward under section 11 of the Mental Health Act 1992. His family had contacted the mental health services as they were very concerned about his ability to care for himself.  He presented in dirty, wrinkled clothing and was malodorous, appearing not to have showered for several days.  His clothes were loose and he appeared gaunt, his family report that he has lost a significant amount of weight recently.  On assessment Mike made poor eye contact and replied with monosyllabic replies to questions asked.  There was also marked latency of response.  His family report that there has been a steady deterioration in Mike’s functioning since his wife died eight months ago and they are concerned as he had been expressing that life was not worth living without his wife and he wished he were dead to.  They report they feel the only thing that stops him from acting on these thoughts are his strong Christian beliefs despite Mike no longer attending his regular church. Mike has denied having any problems and he wished his family wouldn’t interfere in his affairs. He refused to come to hospital voluntarily stating that he was perfectly able to cope on his own.

Ideas are generally presented logically with a clear and sequential line of reasoning.  The introduction provides some attempt to place the topic within an appropriate setting along with some sense of the line of reasoning to be developed.  The conclusion briefly outlines findings.
There is an apparent attempt to develop a logical, sequential line of reasoning but this is not fully developed.  The introduction provides a broad orientation to the topic.  The conclusion provides an overview of the assignment rather than identification of findings.
Ideas are disjointed with little or no evidence of support for a central argument.  The assignment has considerable limitations in/or lacks an introduction and conclusion.
