Case Assignment

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

1. Read the information on the Home page for Module 2 (press the “Back” link to get there from this page)

2. View all of the links included in the Home page and any provided here

Now answer these questions regarding the material contained on the Module 2 Home Page:

1. Which groups of microbes are discussed on the Home page?

2. To which group do the microbes in the images belong? What diseases do they cause?

3. What component of the cell walls of bacteria does the Gram method stain?

4. Which division of bacteria contains pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria?

5. Which was your favorite glass virus sculpture? Were any of the sculptures mislabeled as viruses? If so which ones?

6. What is an endonuclease?

7. Are fungi eukaryotes or prokaryotes? Are they more like animals or plants?

Finally read these articles and answer the questions that follow each to complete this Case Assignment:

2. Hoffman, C et al. Archaea and Fungi of the Human Gut Microbiome: Correlations with Diet and Bacterial Residents. PLOS. 2013:8:e66019.

Answer the following questions:

In the abstract of this peer-reviewed scientific study,

• What do the authors say about the influence of diet on health? What groups of microbes does this study focus on? How were these groups characterized?
• Which type of archaea were most abundant? Which fungal phyla were most abundant?
• What components of diet were associated with the abundance of these microbes? Describe the relationship (negative/positive) by reviewing page 6 for more detail.

In the first paragraph of the Introduction of this study, there are four things listed that could affect the abundance of microbes at different body sites. What are they?

Part II

Choose a resident microbe from the FAQ: Human Microbiome document that you viewed in Module 1. Describe its symbiotic role within our microbiome. Do a little independent research to determine whether this microbe can become pathogenic. If so, describe the conditions under which this microbe assumes this opportunistic role. Be sure to cite your references and include a references section.

Module 3 – Case

Physical and chemical control of growth and viability

Case Assignment

In the Module 3 Case Assignment you will explore bacterial growth and methods used to measure and control the growth of microbes. After you have read the information on the Home page, answer the following questions:

1.From the video on metabolism, where do they say metabolism is accomplished in the human cell? Be specific and include a brief description of the organelle they describe. Do we accomplish aerobic or anaerobic metabolism?

2.What does the video describe as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain?

3.Using the dichotomous key linked to the term “identify” on the Home page, which organisms in the first frame of the video have been described in previous module materials?

Now choose a pathogenic bacteria to discuss and find the antibiotic that can be used to control it. Use this link toAntibiotic Modes of Action to learn more about how antibiotics work and to identify the appropriate antibiotic for your chosen pathogen. Use the following format to write this section of your Case Assignment:

Introduction

Include the growth requirements and phenotypic characteristics of your pathogenic bacteria. Refer to thedichotomous keys,growth patterns, and the CDC website to properly discuss these phenotypic descriptions of your pathogen.

Body Paragraph 1

Is this bacteria ONLY pathogenic or does it reside as a normal part of the Human Microbiome? If it is also a nonpathogenic resident microbe, what conditions create the pathogenic state? (We use the term “opportunistic pathogen” to describe this type of pathogen).

Body Paragraph 2

Describe the mode of action of the antibiotic class used to control this bacteria.

Conclusion

Summarize the topics you described and explain how the characteristics of your pathogen can be used to control it.

Module 4 – Case

Pathogenicity and Immunology; Host resistance and the immune response

Case Assignment

In this Case Assignment, you will focus on the materials that you viewed on the Home page. After reading the text and viewing each of the links provided there, address the following questions:

What are three methods of disease transmission mentioned in the epidemiology animation on the Home page? Provide some examples.

What are the most common vectors mentioned in the video on transmission of disease?

Which pathogens were mentioned in the Virulence Factors animations? List all of the pathogens mentioned and then choose two to discuss. In your discussion include:

How do they hide from host defenses?

How do they invade or penetrate the host?

Research how they reproduce, and ID them using at least three phenotypic descriptions (you can refer to the dichotomous key from the previous module for phenotypic descriptions).

Note whether the pathogen you chose was reported as a risk to the workplace in theInfectious Diseases in the Workplace article you read on the Home page.

Note the total cases and related mortality reported by theCDC stats in the linked report.

Organize these using headings for each topic and write your answers in paragraph form.
