Welcome to MOS 6625 – System Safety Engineering. For our first weekly discussion board I think it is only fitting that we all get to know each other as we will be very connected over the next 8 weeks. Please introduce yourself to your professor and your classmates. Be sure to include your 1) name, 2) hometown and/or state, 3) profession, 4) life outside of (family, hobbies, etc), AND 5) one unique fact about yourself. Unit 2 Discussion

This week our lesson focuses on designing engineered safety management systems. From your current understanding, briefly explain why you think it is important to consider a product’s life cycle when assessing and designing a safety management system. Why do you believe your choice is important? You may find it helpful to read Bahr’s thoughts on pages 62-64 in the textbook as well as the Unit II Study Guide before you respond.

For this week’s discussion, please comment on how important you think it is for safety engineers to study and understand diverse work systems in different sectors of industry. Why do you think this? You may find it helpful to read the Unit III Study Guide before you respond.

Unit 4 Discussion

For this week’s discussion you are asked to read section 6.1 on page 184 of the textbook. Of the seven listed process hazard analysis tools, which tools, if any have you used in the past? Which tools would you consider more appropriate for preliminary engineering design meetings, and which tools would you consider more appropriate for more in-depth, detailed engineering meetings, leading to the design of a work system in your industry? Explain your response in detail. You may also benefit by reading the Unit IV Study Guide before you respond.

For this week’s discussion I would like for your to share your thoughts on how important you think it is for safety engineers to consider statistical probability and statistical forecasting when evaluating work system safety. Reflect on why you think this. You may find it helpful to read the Unit V Study Guide before you respond.

For this week’s discussion please share your thoughts on the anticipated safety quality outcome differences in training line workers in general safe work habits as opposed to training an entire organization on a safety knowledge management system. For this week’s discussion I’d like for you to consider the following:

If you are designing a system safety program plan for one of your organization’s work systems, describe the work system and the hazards that you anticipate needing to address within the plan. You will need to read the Unit VII Study Guide and syllabus instructions before you respond.
