Analysis
Scope of the problem: The current problem is with the novice nursed undertaking their
professional responsibilities. Due to variety of reasons like lack of confidence, lack of
orientation, due to poor hands on experience, lack of soft skills, work culture problems etc,
4
number of nurses is turning off during this time itself. As per Abdulla (2019) the problem is
spread in all novice nurses in different organizations which include university hospitals,
commercial health care centres, government health care units and so forth. At an average of
5-6% of the novice nurses are turning off if there isn’t any intervention or special focus
applied for.
Significance of the problem: If the same conditions prevails without any focus on the
intervention, it is more likely the retention problems can have implications both to the nurses
and the health care systems, the overall quality of the health care will come down(Huston et
al.,2018). Also, this will impact the cost of the health care practices. As the nurses who will
be turnoff will impact the overall cost of the nursing operations, it is more likely that it will
impact considerable investment in the training will go waste as well. Also unprepared nurses
will be safety problem as well to the patients taking the care.
Significance of problem to the nursing: Retention of the nurses in the health care is a problem
of profession as well. When nurses are subjected to poor orientation for the practical work
apart from immediate consequences of leaving the job, there will be implications to the
demoralization of nurses in general further it can result in poor motivation to the nurses to
take up the profession (Hezeveh et al., 2014).
Conclusion
As a whole, it indicates that there is considerable need for focussing on the problem of the
novice nurse’s retention issues. Otherwise implications of the same can be to the nurses,
health care system and profession as well. They can impact the overall system negatively.
