At the beginning of the course, I stated that I did not like thinking about getting old and definitely did not like the thought of death. I discovered that I am not the only one who thinks this way as some of my classmates stated similar ideas. I did learn however is not only about people growing old, but there is also a lot of research done and to be done when it comes to understanding the process of aging. Also, scientist, demographers, and others rely on research to identify gaps in society and determine if a population is old or young. Through research, we can identify the number of resources available and what amount would be needed in the future. For example, the Baby Boomers generation is becoming the fastest growing segment in the US, it is important to know what resources are available to properly care for this aging generation. Would we as a society have the proper training and resources to care for a mass geriatric population? If so, would they be enough? What impact would this have on workers? Would the workers be able to handle the care of the elderly and the children? Soon 1 out of 5 adults would be elderly. I found this quite interesting, there is somewhat of an uncertainty to what will actually happen but I am confident that as a society we would be able to adapt and recruit the resources needed to successfully take care of our elders. The United States ranks first in life expectancy, it has increased in the past 100 yrs thanks to medical and technological advancements. I believe more advancements in medicine and technology will continue to help us become a better society.

This course has taught me that though aging is a process that we all have to go thru, the choices we make when it comes to our health will make a difference in how we age. I have learned that many factors can play a role in whether we age successfully or not, including socioeconomic status. I am a believer that where you come from does not define who you are. So, I take it that where I come from does not define how I will age, in the end, if I can do something that would make a positive impact then I will.
