Organization Structure/Performance Review

Organization Structure/Performance Review

Part 1 Assignment

A common approach for assessing an organization’s structure is examining organic and mechanistic characteristics. This rating tool has been used by many researchers and others who study organizational behavior (Dust, Resick, & Mawritz, 2014). Thinking about an organization you are familiar with, assess its current structure based on the mechanistic and organic approach. On a scale of 1 to 10, rate your preference and/or perception of the following characteristics and prepare a brief summary analyzing your results:
Mechanistic vs. Organic Task Role: Rigid or Flexible Communication: Vertical or Multidirectional Decision Making: Centralized or Decentralized Sensitivity to Environment: Closed or Open
After completing your analysis, determine whether you were surprised by your responses. Support your response with examples. Then, identify which aspects of your organization’s structure you would change and explain why.
Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.
Length: 3-4 pages, not including title and reference pages

Part 2 Assignment

Select a peer or someone in your current or former organization whose work you are familiar with. Arrange a meeting with the employee to discuss his or her performance. If you are unable to meet in person, you may conduct the meeting virtually by phone or through a Skype call. In a role-play situation, pretend you are the manager and provide feedback on the employee’s strengths, weaknesses, and any opportunities for improvement. During your meeting, make notes of the conversation between you and the employee.
Thinking about your meeting with the employee, evaluate your own performance during the review. Were you pleased with the outcome? Do you feel the feedback you provided was effective? Were there any areas in which your employee disagreed with the assessment? What would you do differently?
Prepare a report in which you reflect on your experiences from this exercise. In addition, submit a copy of the notes/transcript you developed during your meeting.
