Week 3 Assignment: Source Organization Worksheet

During week 2, you were introduced to an organizational tool to help you track and evaluate sources as you found them during the research phase of your project. If you did not download the Word document or the spreadsheet, please do so now. Before you begin please review the Lesson material from Week 2 on Scholarly Sources.

Part 1 Worksheet

For your final project, you will need to collect a minimum of 4 Scholarly Sources. These 4 Scholarly Sources must:

  • Relate to the research questions you posed in your Week 2 concept map or outline.
  • Make connections between your scholarly resources and your research topic—(Please note: you are building toward your project with each assignment in this course).

When you have logged at least 4 Scholarly Sources, fill out the Source Organizational Worksheet and include:

  • The bibliographical information as Given in the worksheet, AND
  • Summarize the source in your own words with proper grammar and spelling

Then attach the document to the assignment submission.

Part 2 Paragraph Submission

In the textbox space, draft a 4-5 sentence paragraph with proper grammar and spelling, describing:

  • Your source search process And
  • How these sources might be useful in creating your final presentation about a career interest.

Once you have completed Part 1 and Part 2 you can formally submit your assignment submission for grading.

WEEK 2:

PART 1: Choose a career interest topic for your final project due later in the course. Your career interest topic should be realistic and one that you are actually interested in learning more about. The career interest might be a field in which you could become employed after completing your APUS degree program or additional training. Using your career interest topic, create a concept map OR an outline to define the task in your research process. Use the process of outlining or mapping the topic for your final project so that you can focus your topic and determine the nature and types of information you will need later in our course. This assignment is a brainstorming activity, not a research task.In your outline OR concept map, include the following:One (1) topic sentence stating which career interest/discipline you will exploreFour (4) or more specific, critical thinking questions about your career interest that can be later answered through source searching and presented in your final projectFor each question, two or more supporting detail statements that describe the type of information needed to answer the question (the actual answers are not yet needed)For each detail statement or statement pair, a description of what kinds of sources might be helpful in providing the information you needFormat appropriately designed for either an outline or concept mapFormal, detailed outlines are useful organizational strategies–the more detail you include, the easier the final project will come together. If you choose to use an outline, it must be very detailed. Consider searching outlining strategies and designs.Concept maps can be developed through one of several available websites:CMAP Tools http://cmap.ihmc.us This tool allows you to move between devices.https://bubbl.us/ This site allows concept map creation and has a companion app.http://www.smartdraw.com/specials/ppc/mind-map-sof… This site includes a free trial.http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Mai… mind mapping software.Gliffy http://www.gliffy.comX-mind https://www.xmind.netMindmeister https://www.mindmeister.comMindmoto http://www.mindomo.comPART 2: Write one paragraph (5-6 sentences) describing the information you listed in your concept map. Your paragraph should describe the career interest topic you chose, the questions you will answer in your project, the types of information needed to answer those questions, and your predictions of source types you might need.SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT:PART 1—Your Concept Map or Outline should be submitted as a .doc, .docx, .jpg, .pdf as appropriate for the document you have created.
