Implementing Change

Topic 1:

Change in our work and personal lives is often a stress inducing event. The goal of the change agent should be to mitigate stress as much as possible. Share your experience with change, good or bad, and if it was “good” experience, what made it good? And if “bad” what made it bad? How to these experiences align with best practices in implementing change?

Topic 2:

Your manager asks you to implement a new process in your unit. Knowing that an important first step in implementing change is to evaluate and document the current process, you tell your manager this but he or she says ‘there is not enough time to do this” how would you make the case to you manager that skipping this step may not provide the outcome that they are looking for in their new process?

Week 3 Discussion

Technology’s Impact on Population Health

Advances in technology have fed the explosion of wearable devices and patient self-monitoring. How can nurses leverage this technology to promote healthy lifestyles and improved compliance with self-care and monitoring?

There are vast quantities of consumer data available today. For example, every time you use your grocery store loyalty card, data about what you purchased is collected, analyzed, and saved. This data in the hands of population health professionals can contribute to the creation of healthy lifestyle programs. However, the same data in the hands of health insurance plans could lead to higher insurance costs of denial of insurance. Should there be regulations on how these consumer data are used?

Simulation in Healthcare

Topic 1

Simulation technology has been transformative in nursing education. Through the use of simulation, nurses can repeatedly practice skills and gain clinical confidence in a risk-free environment. Simulation, however, is not just for health care professionals. How can nurses leverage simulation technology for patient and family education? Share your experiences and ideas for leveraging simulation technology for patient education.

Topic 2

IT can be a great tool in our caring environment, but it can also be perceived as a hindrance. Recent patient satisfaction surveys have had comments such as “the nurse and the doctor were more interested in the computer than me” and “I felt like they were treating the machines not the person connected to them.”

You read in your textbook about Jean Watson and her Theory of Human Caring. How can we, as nurses, ensure that the patient understands that he or she is at the center of our care and that the technology is an adjunct to it? Share your experiences and ideas to ensure a patient-focused experience in a high-tech environment.

Change Proposal

Technology has been credited with contributing to a safer patient environment. Create a change proposal for a new technology that will contribute to a safer patient environment. Examine human factors including resistance to change into the expanded use of informatics. Be sure to include how your proposed change will impact patient safety, how you will measure the impact of your change, and how you will communicate and implement this change.

Informatics in the Clinical Setting

Conduct an interview with someone in an informatics role in a clinical setting. Then, compose a 4-5 pages paper discussing the following components:

Role description and education level required for the role.

Describe their views on how their role impacts patient safety and improves the quality of patient care.

Describe the Human Factors faced in the role and other challenges.

Express insights gained from the interview.

Research and discuss the impact of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Indicators and The Joint Commission Patient Safety Goals in your clinical setting. Describe how these governing agencies impact delivery of direct patient care.

Research, discuss, and identify the Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) utilized in your clinical setting. Be sure to get the perspective of your selected informatics professional during your interview.
