Mowbot’s MARR is 12%.  Based on annual worth analysis, which unit should you recommend?

  1. Mowbot’s management is evaluating new proposals for production machines from three companies:

Use incremental present worth analysis to decide which alternative should be recommended.  MARR is 12%.

  1. Cameo’s sales representative has offered an up front price reduction. The proposals are now as follows:

Use incremental rate of return analysis to decide which alternative should be recommended.  MARR is 12%.

  1. Mowbot Company is evaluating the production of a new part. It would require the acquisition of a special machine costing $120,000.  The machine would be used for five years then sold for $40,000.  Mowbot’s MARR is 15%.
    1. In addition to the sales quotation, the sales representative has quoted a five year lease for $25,000 per year, with the first year’s payment due on delivery. Based on pretax analysis, should Mowbot choose leasing or buying?
    2. The lathe is expected to result in net benefits (income in excess of costs) of $35,000 per year. Based on the choice of leasing or buying from above, should Mowbot acquire the lathe?

Discussion: Use of Research in Clinical Practice

Discussion: Use of Research in Clinical Practice

Throughout this course, you have examined and considered how the research process contributes to the field of clinical nursing practice. More than just an exercise in developing a research question, searching the literature to guide future research, and performing actual data collection/data analysis, the conclusions you draw from your research findings are useful in helping to develop and enact effective clinical practice. In essence, the process of conducting research contributes to positive social change in that the solutions that you might propose as a nurse researcher and professional will likely impact quality of care and patient safety.

For this Discussion, read the book chapter by Titler (2008) presented in this week’s resources that describes evidence-based practice and translational science, as well as the kind of research needed for both. Then, reflect on how the knowledge you gained about research will support your effort as a nursing professional to improve patient quality and safety.

By Day 3

Describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety in your health care setting. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how the knowledge gained about research in this course will support your role in practice as a nursing professional. Then, describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety. Be sure to include in your Discussion any unanswered questions that need to be considered by your classmates and/or Instructor.

Note: Post a three paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Use the writing resources to develop your post.

3. Case keys: What is the key question, opportunity, or issue in the case? Key success factors: Determine the main factors that are vital to the success of the company (maximum of three factors). Key uncertainties: Determine the main factors that could seriously damage the chosen strategy (maximum of three factors). 4. Analysis of alternative solutions: Generate distinct, realistic alternative solutions to the problem. Identify all options; eliminate those that do not fit with goals, objectives, or resources. Discuss pros and cons. Build an argument to accept one and reject others; justify the choice in relation to the criteria for an effective solution. Address qualitative and quantitative considerations and include target segment and suggested marketing mix. Address key uncertainties that could seriously damage the chosen alternative.

Question 1.  Using the method discussed in the textbook section on attitudes (p153) and your experience with the product positioning project, finish developing the hypothetical multi-attribute table for three brands of toothpaste.  Be sure to explain the components of the table, differences among the brands and potential marketing application for each brand.  You will need to enter two brands and three attributes and speculate on the ratings of the brands you selected.  (You don’t have to survey real respondent for this question.)

A sample table is presented below.  You will have different numbers for the ratings when you develop your table.

Question 2.  Extend on a hypothesis testing project idea about the potential influence of Corporate Social Responsibly (CSR) on perceptions of brand attributes and purchase intention.

Design a study and rating scale instruments to explore the possible effect.   How would you quantitatively measure the following?

  • Changes in brand attribute perceptions based on CSR information about the brand.
  • Change in brand purchase intention based on CSR information about the brand.

For example, think about how perceptions of product quality might change if consumers knew that a company was good or bad on CSR.

Also think about the following:

  • How would brand perceptions change if the consumer had a strong or weak existing brand perception?

For example, if someone has a strong positive attitude about a brand, how would new negative information about the brand’s CSR affect how they felt about the brands attributes (e.g., quality, reliability, prestige, etc.)
How would you measure existing brand attitudes on a rating scale?
Don’t use open-ended questions and think about an experimental design (A-B testing) with a control condition.  (For example, in A-B testing one random group of the respondents would get different CSR information than another random group of respondents.)

Writing Assignment: Media Kit
Media Kit 60 points
ASSIGNMENT DETAILS Play the role of a PR specialist for an organization to which you belong or an organization for which you volunteer (the organization must be local). Create a three-piece media kit, including a news release, a backgrounder and a fact sheet. Your work will be evaluated on the content, organization, format, grammar and AP style of the documents based on information covered in the textbook and lecture. Refer to the grading rubric below. You will submit all documents to the same Carmen assignment – it may appear that you are “replacing” the first document when you upload the second and third, but you’re not. I can see them all.
News Release Write a standard print news release (NOT an email news release) about an “event,” which should be something happening within the next year so you have enough information to write the release. The “event” could be:
 A new organization introducing itself to the public
 An established organization launching a new product, service, etc.
 An announcement that an organization is moving to a new location, making a change of some kind
 Promotion of an event such as an annual convention
The body copy for the release should be 400-500 words and you must include at least three sources (list them on the bottom of the news release for grading purposes). One source must be a person you interviewed and you directly quote in the news release. Consult with your client regarding letterhead. You may need to create the letterhead if your client does not already have a digital template. (If your client does not want your documents to go on official letterhead, then create a “fictional” letterhead for this assignment, but you must have letterhead.) View the “News Release Example” on Carmen.
Backgrounder
Bio of a key player, or background or history of the organization (300-350 words). You may use information provided by the organization or found online, but edit and rewrite it with strong action verbs, concise sentences, strong grammar and AP style. **See format discussed in class lecture
Fact Sheet Cannot cover the same player/organization outlined in the backgrounder. Choose a different key person, a product or the organization if you did not do your backgrounder on the organization itself (300-350 words). You may use information provided by the organization or found online, but edit and rewrite it with strong action verbs, concise sentences, strong grammar and AP style. **See format discussed in class lecture

Your essay should be 3-5 pages in length. Essays that demonstrate understanding of the assigned article, as well as the natural system(s) behind sea level rise will receive the higher scores.

Unit 3: The Discourse Community Ethnography

Unit 3: The Discourse Community Ethnography
Assignment
First, choose a discourse community that has impacted you or interests you. Some possibilities
include specific clubs, occupations, Greek organizations, or religious groups that you belong to,
come into contact with, or would be interested in joining.
Then, find a preliminary answer to this research question: “What are the characteristics and goals of this discourse community and how are those demonstrated through observed activities and genres?” Think of your job as being split into three steps:
Step 1: Collect Data/Observations
* Observe members of the discourse community while they are engaged in a shared activity; take detailed notes (What are they doing? What kinds of things do they say? What specialized language do they use? What do they write and communicate? How do you know who is “in” and who is “out”?).
* Collect and analyze anything people in that community read or write (their genres)—even very short things like forms, football plays, notes, IMs, and text messages.
* Discuss how members of the discourse community move through the hierarchy of the community. Take us through the process of how one enters and moves “up” through the discourse community. This should include how people create identity and gain authority.
Step 2: Analyze the Data
Use the researchers we read (Ann Johns and Kain & Wardle) to help you organize and analyze the data you’ve collected. Feel free to use any other research or authors you find relevant to your discussion.

Step 3: Present Your Findings
Given all the data you’ve collected and analyzed, decide what you want to focus on in your
paper. Is there something interesting regarding the goals of the community? Types of literacies
in the community? Its lexis or genres? Refine the above research question to fit your purpose(s).
Then construct an essay that demonstrates what you’ve learned about discourse communities, reviews relevant literature, describes your methodology and your findings, and presents an answer to your specific research question.
Format
All submitted drafts, including the final draft, should follow the following format guidelines:
* MLA style for in-text citations, works cited, margins, headers, font, etc.
* NOTE: For this paper you must submit all transcripts, interviews, and documents you gather. All first-hand materials you collect should be in the Appendix section, including examples of genre.

LEARNING JOURNAL: Habits 2 and 3

Assigned Reading: Habit 3 (pages 155-189) and First Things First, chapter 15 (on Canvas).

   Personal reflection

Quadrant III—The Quadrant of Distraction

Spending time in QIII is reacting to things that seem urgent, but in reality, they are not important to you. Many times the urgency of these matters is based on something that distracts you in the moment OR something that represents the priorities and expectations of others.

What are the chronic Quadrant III activities in your life?

How can you reduce or eliminate these QIII activities and become more effective?

  Understanding Key Concepts

Answer the following questions.  Your answers should be written as an essay or paragraph and demonstrate your understanding of each concept.

Habit 2 is the habit of personal leadership, and Habit 3 is the habit of personal management.  Review what Dr. Covey says as he introduces Habit 3—read pages 155-156 before responding to these questions.

  1. What is the difference between leadership and management?

  1. How does Habit 2 help you to live Habit 3?

  1. In your own life, do you spend more time on leadership or management? What is the result?

  1. Covey talks about the compass paradigm and the clock paradigm. What is the difference between these two paradigms and why is it important to understand the difference?

Before you answer this next question, review the Six Step Process for Weekly Planning on Canvas.

  1. Habit 3 is the habit of action and integrity. One of the steps of weekly planning is INTEGRITY IN THE MOMENT OF CHOICE.Explain what you think this means and why it is a part of weekly planning.

  Application Activity—Values and Priorities

Step 1: Identify Key Values

Dr. Covey explains in Habit 3 that “the essence of effective time and life management is to organize and execute around balanced priorities.”  The purpose of this activity is to identify and clarify some key values in your life.  Answer the following questions.

Questions Answers
Describe yourself in one word.  I am ___________.
List two of the most important people in your life and one word to describe each of them.
Name one of your personal traits that you would want your children to emulate.
You have started your own country.  On your dollar bill it says:  “In ____we trust.”  What word would you put in the blank?
What are two qualities you look for (or looked for) in a life partner?
Finish this quote by Gandhi and make it your own:  “Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with ______.”  What word would you put in the blank?
If there were just two rules everyone should follow, what would they be?
Think of a famous person you admire.  Describe what you admire about that person in one word.
Visualize a tall skyscraper like the Empire State Building.  Across the street is another identical skyscraper.  Joining these two buildings across the top is an 8” steel beam.  For what or whom would you cross?

Step 2: Clarify Values

Now, look back over your answers above.  You have identified some of your values.  List three of them below.

For each of the three values, write a clarifying statement about each one.  A clarifying statement is a way of demonstrating that the value is real in your life; it is like creating a verbal picture of what the value looks like.  Ask yourself, “How am I living the value?”

Value Clarifying Statement
Example: Honesty “I never cheat on my income taxes”

Step 3: Live your Priorities

  1. Do you do things every week that demonstrate how these values are priorities in your life? Do you consistently “put first things first”?

  1. Respond to this question that Dr. Covey asks in the text: “If you were to fault yourself in one of three areas, which would it be: (1) the in ability to prioritize; (2) the inability or desire to organize around those priorities; or (3) the lack of discipline to execute around them, to stay with your priorities and organization?

  1. What changes can you make to be more effective at living Habit 3—Put first things first?
