CASE STUDY 1:  GE Healthcare (A): Innovating for Emerging Markets

1. Determine two (2) emerging trends in the external environment that prompted General Electric (GE) Healthcare to develop a new strategy for the production and marketing of a low cost Electroencephalography (EEG) machine in bottom of the pyramid markets (BOP).
2. Examine two (2) internal barriers GE Healthcare faced when developing its BOP market in India and determine the manner in which they hindered GE Healthcare’s growth in this market segment.

1. Analyze two (2) of the significant external barriers that GE Healthcare faced when trying to meet its marketing goals in the Indian market. Propose two (2) ways to address these barriers.

1. Analyze the specific steps GE took in developing its strategy to grow its BOP market. Determine the manner in which those actions apply to the principles of strategic thinking and strategic planning.

1. Determine the manner in which GE Healthcare’s strategy to improve its position in BOP markets contributed to the organization’s value chain in both emerging and developed markets.

The video I watched is with Detroit Mayor Mike Dugan. It is a segment of state of the city highlights. I chose this video because it very closely related to what my idea is. His jesters are mainly hands movements and some facial expressions. He is standing at a podium and he keeps great eye contact with the audience by keeping his head on a swivel. Just from watching it I can feel his emotion on the topic. What made his speech very effective is that he used great details in his case. He describes what one person is going through and why it needs to be improved. That makes it easy for the whole audience to understand why he believe this is an issue that needs to be fixed. I really appreciate the ending of the segment. When he told the audience it takes one person 5 hours to take a bus ride for 5 miles. I think that was the real wake up call to the audience.

These are the questions that I would like to ask from watching this segment

1.      How long will it take to get the funds from the President?  Will these buses be environmental friendly?

2.      How will this affect the bus fare prices? If it does will be a dramatic change.

3.      Since it took this long for issue to be addressed, will there be some kind of survey involved to get feedback from passengers? IF there are more issues from survey how long will it take to fix them? 

I know that these are compound questions, but I figure if I was there I only get a chance to ask one of the questions.

• Describe and evaluate the financial environment at Genesis Energy by using ratio analysis of the company.
• Choose one ratio from each of the five categories listed in the table on page 103 of your textbook, Brigham and Ehrhardt, and do a 3-year ratio trend analysis. Compare these results to the industry averages. What do the results tell you?
• Name three specific options that are available to Genesis Energy for obtaining needed capital.
• Identify and explain two ways Genesis Energy can improve its strategy.
• Explain what specific macroeconomic factors are likely to affect genesis, i.e., inflation, interest rates, exchange rates etc. Please do a brief country risk assessment and discuss the most likely problems a company like Genesis Energy is likely going to confront when contemplating an international expansion. What would be the least risky avenue for them to get their product/service to the country you have chosen? Which entry mode is the riskiest? Explain.

Write a 2-3-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Then, create a 6–8-slide PowerPoint with Speaker’s notes and references (including research) presenting your findings to the Genesis Energy operations management team.
