2. What category does the chosen disease belong to? (See Module 1)

3. Classify the disease based on its intensity and duration. (acute, chronic, latent).

4. Identify the homeostatic mechanism that has failed.

“This week I want to look at Chronic Bronchitis diseases. It is irritation of bronchial tubes in the respiratory system and strictly triggered by viral infections, smoking, and environmental factors such as pollution (Cunha, J. P. n.d). Therefore, it can be categorized among infectious diseases. It is an active acute disease which can last for a long period of time (Staff, F. E. 2017). The homeostatic process responsible for maintaining optimum PH level of body substances could be affected by this disease (West, J. (2016). Some of the signs are chest tightness and trouble breathing that are triggered by the inflammation of the bronchial tubes which cause the production of excusive thick mucus that could obstruct the flow of air to and from lunges. On the other hand, continues cough, mucus and wheezing while breathing is some of the symptoms of chronic bronchitis (Cunha, J. P. n.d). After the medical professional assessed symptoms of the patient, and suspect chronic bronchitis, he or she can order pulmonary function test. This test involves a machine that will be connected to a mouth of the patient with a mouthpiece in order to let all the air breathed by the patient enter in to the machine. Therefore, the doctor can measure the amount of air in the lungs (Martel, J. (2017).”

4. Prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke causes damage to ciliated epithelium that line portions of the respiratory tract. Discuss the implications of this damage.

When you wake up in the morning you have a fair amount of nasal congestion and think you may be coming down with a cold. There are several factors that can impact the health of our heart and cardiovascular system. Personally, I believe my work environment exposes me for such factors. However, before breakdown this factors I would like to say a few things about my job. The flight deck of an aircraft carrier is one of the most dangerous working environments in the world. Imagine been part of a crew that works in the environment were more than fifty aircrafts and helicopters moved around, troubleshoot, fueled, armed and launched simultaneously. As an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Aircraft Handling (ABH), I am assigned to direct, recover, and move aircraft around in this very hectic place where the likely hood of getting hurt is extremely high. In addition to that, the ABH community bears responsibilities such as aircraft emergency and rescue mission which includes firefighting and rescue the flight crew. We do all this at daily dose as horrifying danger shadowing over us. First, I am exposed to high level of carbon monoxide, which could prevent the cardiovascular system from effectively transferring oxygenated blood to different part of the body including heart. Second, lack of sleep due to long working hours. According to national sleep foundation lack of sleep increases the risk for heart and cardiovascular disease regardless of age, and it causes disorders in fundamental health conditions including blood pressure (How Sleep Deprivation Affects Your Heart, n.d.). Last but not least the long work hours, hectic and routine nature of my work gives me too much stress. Work stress is directly associated with risk of heart disease. The amount of stress could promote behavioral changes that could increases heart diseases risks such as smoking, drinking and over eating (T. 2008). .”

“In the military sleep apnea is one of the most common conditions I hear about but never took the time to research the severity of this condition. To be honest I thought soldiers would claim this condition just to avoid going to the field. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. You may have sleep apnea if you snore loudly, and you feel tired even after a full night’s sleep. The main types of sleep apnea are: Obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax. This condition directly effects the respiratory system. In adults, sleep apnea is developed from excess weight and obesity, which is associated with soft tissue of the mouth and throat. During sleep, when throat and tongue muscles are more relaxed, this soft tissue can cause the airway to become blocked. If you have obstructivesleep apnea, your risk of high blood pressure (hypertension) is greater than if you don’t. Obstructive sleep apnea may increase the risk of recurrent heart attack, and abnormal heartbeats, such as atrial fibrillation. Obstructive sleep apnea also increases the risk of stroke.”
