Coaching for Success

Employee Relations Scenarios

1. You are an employee relations manager, Phillip a supervisor, comes to you and reports that many employees are complaining that Sally (one his employees) has an unpleasant body odor and that they find it difficult to work around her. He also states that she is coming to work increasingly more disheveled. You (but not Phillip) are also aware that Sally has ADA accommodations due a mental health condition.

2. You are an employee relations manager at an upscale department store, Tai, the manager from sales department, comes to you concerned about the appearance of some of the salesclerks; particularly Alex. Alex is sporting (on his forearm) a new, large tattoo of a devil eating a rat. Tai states that both she, and her boss, believe that some customers might find it offensive. Note – no customer has complained yet… There is no current policy regarding body art.

3. You are an employee relations manager and Hector, the marketing director who supervises 18 professionals and support staff, comes to you about a concern. Hector starts out describing the work environment and states that it requires a “collaborative environment where the professionals give work direction to the support staff.” Hector indicates that Dana, a professional on his team, has started dating a person on the support staff. Although there is no policy prohibiting dating, several co-workers have complained about the two being “too affectionate” at work. Hector states that some employees are also implying that there is preferential treatment for Dana’s newfound love interest.

4. You are an employee relations manager and Tanisha, a supervisor, comes to you saying that Sidney, an employee has recently been missing work. Tanisha states that Sidney tends to call in at the last minute, and there seems to be a pattern developing of Mondays and Fridays. Both you and Tanisha are aware that Sidney has been in rehabilitation previously for alcohol abuse.

5. You are an employee relations manager and Jaime, a project manager who supervises a team of 11 people, comes to you. Jaime reports that in the middle of December he noticed the office supply cabinet was being conspicuously depleted of tape, scissors, and packing materials. Jaime reports that other than him, the administrative assistant, Lesley, is the only one with the key to the cabinet.
