Essay is required for Texas government and is worth 5% of your overall course grade. To receive full credit, the paper should be at least 2 pages in length, double spaced, with 12 inch font and one to one-half inch margins. You will be graded on completing assignment for content, clarity and completeness. You may use the internet, newspapers, magazines, books, etc. to gather information for the paper. No need to cite your courses. This is your essay so find your information on your topic and then your opinion on the topic.

CHOOSE ONE of the following topics:

1) How common is poverty in Texas compared with the nation as a whole? Within Texas, how does poverty differ by ethnicity? What possible explanations might account for these patterns? Discuss poverty in the U.S. compared to state of Texas.

2) Texas has a serious problem with Border Drug Violence. Discuss the Border Drug Violence and how Texas is affected by the drug cartels and drug wars. p. 84-85 will help you start to focus on this issue.

3)Read the section on Capital Punishment (Death Penalty). What is your opinion on the Capital Punishment? Are you FOR or AGAINST the Death Penalty? Give specific reasons and facts to back up your position. Identify one criminal case in Texas related to the death penalty and outline the crime and give your opinion. If you are opposed to the Death Penalty, what other penalty options would you recommend rather than death?
