Assignment 1 Document Analysis Essay This assignment is to be submitted in WORD format. Now that you have opened and studied the Tool Box package you may proceed with Assignment 1. Return to the documents in that package whenever you need them throughout the course. They can help you with outlining an essay, creating an argument, and other writing and study skills you may need. Consult “Guidelines for Critical Analysis of primary History documents” ,“Sample Historical Document Analysis” by C. T. Evans, “How to Construct a Paragraph”, “Resources for Avoiding Plagiarism”, and “Sample Page with Footnotes”  to assist you with this first assignment. Consult Writing History: A Guide for Canadian Students, 4th Ed., OUP, 2016 for additional help. Assignment Objectives: For this first assignment you will develop some key skills for “doing history” the way a professional historian might do it. That is, you are asked to look at a set of sources—documents, images, maps, or  a combination of these—and try to answer some questions about the past through an analysis of these sources. Your answer to those questions will be in the form of a short essay of about 1,500 words (or 6–7 double-spaced, typed pages) on one of two topics. Historians spend a considerable amount of time researching in libraries and archives for information on topics of interest to them. The searching has been done for you already in this assignment, but what you are asked to work with is precisely the same sorts of materials a professional historian would use to write a scholarly article or a book. Using the textbook Discovering the Western Past: A Look at the Evidence,7th edition, select one of the two topics listed below. Read each section carefully. Select one of the two topics for closer study, as you will need to use the sources and discussion in your chosen chapter to answer one of the sets of key questions below. Your answer should also address some of the other questions raised in the ‘Questions to Consider’ section of the relevant chapter and use all of the sources in that chapter for your evidence. Each of those sources must be listed separately in your bibliography at the end of the essay and they should be cited frequently (footnoted) throughout the essay. Note on quotations Although you are encouraged to refer to and even to quote briefly from the primary documents, refrain from quoting from them at length. Block quotes of text are not acceptable for this assignment. However, you may find it useful to cite a few words or phrases here and there when writing your essay. Think of including short quotes from primary documents as including “sound bites” from the past.
