Context The linguist James Paul Gee defines “discourse” as “a kind of identity kit” that allows members of a group to recognize one another. The members of such a group are known as a “discourse community,” or DC. As you’ve read, John Swales uses six characteristics to define a discourse community. These characteristics define ways in which these groups function and build culture.
Although there are many types of discourse communities, all professional and academic cultures define themselves in this way. There are many benefits to joining discourse communities in your field. Often these discourse communities provide opportunities for their membership. It might be said, that to be successful in your chosen academic major or professional career you need to understand and enact the discourse of the group.

Create a “handbook” or training guide for novice members of your chosen academic major or professional career, designed to help prepare them for joining that community.

- How does one become a member of this DC?
- What values, attitudes, and beliefs are needed to succeed in this field?
- What are the common public goals of the discipline?
- Where do professionals go to exchange information with each other? (John Swales calls these “participatory mechanisms.”) For example, trade journals and conferences are common participatory mechanisms.
- How are those participatory mechanisms used? (In other words, what kinds of information and feedback are commonly conveyed?)
- What role does writing play within this DC? What kinds of documents are commonly produced, and what are they used for?

This community consists of professionals who work to provide mental health services to individuals, families, and groups. This proposal aims to identify and describe this discourse community, including its communication practices, language use, and common values and goals. Discourse Community Criteria The community of counselors meets the criteria for a discourse community, as identified by John Swales. The community shares a common goal of providing mental health services and uses specific language and jargon to describe their work (Swales, 2014). Counselors also have established communication practices that are unique to the community, such as conducting therapy sessions and participating in case conferences. Face-to-Face and Online Interaction Counselors interact with their clients face-to-face in individual and group therapy sessions and with other professionals through case conferences and consultation. In recent years, many counselors have also started to provide online counseling services through video conferencing and other digital communication tools (Brooks, 2010). These online interactions are becoming more common due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the need to provide mental health services remotely. Jargon and Specific Language Use Counselors use specific language and jargon unique to the profession. Terms like “transference,” “countertransference,” and “boundaries” are commonly used to describe the therapeutic relationship and process. Additionally, counselors may use diagnostic terminology such as “depression” or “anxiety disorder” when discussing clients’ symptoms. Communication Practices Counselors communicate with clients through various forms of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy. They also communicate with other professionals through case conferences, discussing clients’ progress and developing treatment plans. Counselors may also use written communication to document their sessions and provide reports to clients and other professionals. Conclusion The discourse community of counselors is a vital group of professionals dedicated to providing mental health services to individuals and communities. This proposal has identified the critical criteria that define this community, including its communication practices, language use, and common values and goals.
