Presentation
of your Essay
·
Essays
are to be presented according to the information contained in the University
Guide for the Presentation of Academic Work (see http://www.ballarat.edu.au/generalguide)
·
In the
essay, you are expected to write in paragraph style with an introduction
and a conclusion. The use of
bulleted/numbered lists should be avoided and headings (if any) kept to a
minimum (no more than 5).
·
Essay
should be presented in the following order and format (Mohan, 2008, pp316-317):

a)
Cover
page;
b)
Table
of contents (Auto-generated);
c)
Abstract;
d)
Introduction;
e)
Sections;
f)
Conclusion.
·
Essays
with unsupported personal opinions will be marked down, as will those that make
excessive use of direct quotes (no more than 8 linesin total).
·
Incorrect
APA referencing will also be penalised.
Your essay should include both
a list of references used in the essay and
a bibliography of the wider reading you have done to familiarise yourself with
the topic.
·
Any
direct quotation from one of your sources (i.e. anything that you have not
written yourself) must be referenced (cited) in-text (as well as included in
the reference list); if the quotation is more than three lines in length it
should be formattedin its own
paragraph indented 0.75 cm, single-spaced, with font size 10; if it is three
lines or less it should be surrounded by quotation marks (double inverted
commas). This is normal practice, which
you should always follow.
·
The vast
majority of your essay should consist of your own writing whether paraphrasing
a specific section of a source or synthesizing ideas from a number of
sources. Paraphrasing should also be
accompanied by in-text citation (as for a direct quotation).
·
If you
use a source either with a direct quotation or by paraphrasing and do not
cite it, you are guilty of plagiarism (refer to the course description).

Plagiarism
It
is important to learn from the work of others and you are encouraged to explore
the library, World Wide Web resources and have discussions with other
students. However, work for the
assessment must be entirely your own work.
*Important*
Plagiarism is the presentation of the
expressed thought or work of another person as though it is one’s own without
properly acknowledging that person.
You
must not allow other students to copy your work and must take care to safeguard
against this happening. In cases of
copying, normally all students involved will be penalised equally; an exception
will be if you can demonstrate the work is your own and you took reasonable
care to safeguard against copying.
Plagiarism
is a serious offence. As set out in the
University Regulation 6.1.1. students
who are caught plagiarising will, for a first offence, be given a zero mark for
that task. A second offence will result
in a failing grade for the course involved and any subsequent offence will be
referred to the Student Discipline Committee.

University
Referencing/Citation Style Guide:

The
University has published a style guide to help students correctly reference and
cite information they use in assignments. A copy of the University’s citation
guides can be found on the university’s web site. It is imperative that students
cite all sources of information.

read the description of the Eliza program at the bottom of this question. Is it ethical to make people think they are talking to another person when they are not? Does it make a difference if they find the program to be helpful? Would you mind if a Help facility for some software you were using was a machine instead of a person? Have you ever been embarrassed when you thought you were talking to a person but later found out you were not? “The Way West: Ghost Dance”

Watch the documentary “The Way West: Ghost Dance” from the series American Experience, available at the link posted below. Take notes during the video, listing ten (10) or more historical facts that you learned from the video—what did you learn about the Ghost Dance and the Wounded Knee Massacre that you did not know previously? Include this list in your Documentary Evaluation on a separate page.

After you have finished watching the video, please respond in a three (3) page paper in essay format to the following questions, each in one (or more) separate paragraph(s):

1) Specifically describe the fundamental differences between the Native Americans’ view of the purpose of the Ghost Dance versus the whites’ view of the purpose of the Ghost Dance. Do you think that these differences made the massacre at Wounded Knee inevitable? Why or why not? Give at least two specific reasons for your answer, supported by evidence from the documentary.

2) Despite the lack of active hostilities, the federal government mobilized the largest amount of troops since the Civil War against the Sioux Ghost Dancers. Do you think that the federal government was justified in conducting such a mobilization under these circumstances? Why or why not? Give at least two (2) specific examples from the documentary to support your answer.

3) According to the documentary, what specific methods did Native Americans use to resist subjugation of their traditional cultures and confiscation of their lands in the years between 1870 and 1890? Give an example of each.

4) How, specifically, did Indian policy in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the events leading to the Wounded Knee Massacre, and the Massacre itself demonstrate the consequences of Manifest Destiny?

5) Earlier this year, the Standing Rock Sioux of North Dakota actively protested the construction of an oil pipeline that could potentially pollute the Missouri River, which is their reservation’s principal source of water. State and local law enforcement maintained a heavily armed presence against the protestors. How were conditions similar to the events leading up to the Wounded Knee Massacre? How were the conditions different? Do you think that this confrontation could have ended similarly to the confrontation between the U.S. Army and the Lakota Sioux at Wounded Knee? Why or why not?

Have you ever thought about why people sleep or what purpose sleep serves? This is something that many have wondered for years. Studying what happens when the average person sleeps, how long that person sleeps, and how he or she feels after sleep has taught us a great deal about sleep. Case studies of individuals who have abnormal sleep patterns or sleep needs have also been considered. Some people called nonsomniacs need very little sleep to feel restored. In addition to studying the amount of sleep each person needs, scientists have considered the possible reasons we have different stages of sleep. Scientists have pondered many other things, such as why the amount of time that people spend in different stages of sleep changes over a lifetime.

Answer the following questions:

  • Recent studies indicate that the brain takes mini naps when a person is sleep deprived. What role does sleep play in restoring one’s mind? Consider the cognitive changes that a person experiences when sleep deprived. What is it about nonsomniacs that seems to contradict what most believe about the role of sleep?
  • What is REM sleep, and what role does it play in memory consolidation? Is the hippocampus, a structure known to play a role in the consolidation of memories, active during REM sleep? Might REM-related dreams be related to one’s actual experiences?
  • Why does the amount of time that infants spend sleeping differ from adults? Does REM sleep play a role in the neural development of a young brain? Compare the amount of time people spend in sleep stages over a lifetime. How does slow-wave sleep change over the life span?

When asked, also utilize outside sources. As in all assignments, make sure to cite your sources in your work and provide references for those citations utilizing APA format. Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between one or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Complete your participation for this assignment by the due date assigned.

lasa 2 generating a policy proposal

Although some states and cities have passed laws to ban texting and using handheld phones while driving, there is no current law to ban all cell phone use while driving. However, according to the National Safety Council (2009), 28 percent of all crashes—1.6 million per year—are caused by cell phone use and texting by drivers. The mission of a new national nonprofit organization called FocusDriven, patterned after Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is to make phone use while driving as illegal and socially unacceptable as drunk driving. US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood supports FocusDriven and its efforts: According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, LaHood said this movement will become “an army of people traveling the countryside” to push for bans on cell phone use and tough enforcement (Schmit, 2010).

As a political advocate interested in this issue, you will be writing a policy proposal that utilizes the current research to propose a solution to the issue and submit it in this assignment.

Please note that your proposal is not an opinion/position paper, and your conclusions need to be based on the scientific research you reviewed earlier. Please follow the typical steps in proper academic writing (planning, outlining, drafting, revising, proofing, and editing) to generate the following proposal structure:

Introduction

In the introduction, you should set up the purpose for the proposal, provide a bit of background on the topic, and present your thesis.

Policy

Now that you have researched a variety of studies (in M4: Assignment 2), compile that information together to create a recommendation for policy makers regarding cell phone use while driving.

1: In a one-page summary, compare and contrast the results of the various studies regarding the cognitive abilities that are affected during cell phone use while driving.

2: Using that research, develop and explain particular recommendations for policy makers. For instance, restrict texting, or regulate the use of hand-held phones. All your recommendations must be supported by your research findings.

3: Based on the gaps in current research, describe the variables, populations, and situations which you would like to see future research address.

Conclusion

Review the important current research, your conclusions from that research, and how the future could look in both policy and research. Keep your goal in mind: To convince the reader to support your current policy proposal and future research to examine this issue more closely.

Your proposal should be written in APA style (which includes a title page with running header and a reference page), and free of typographical and grammatical errors. The body of your proposal should be 4–5 pages long.

Policing-the-police-short-essay

Watch the video “Policing the Police” on youtube and write a very detail short essay on it.

No plagiarism

Also, Give a 100 word helpful response to each of these essays starting with “I agree with….”

1) In the Frontline video of, Policing the Police, police accountability and officers abusing their powers is analyzed in New Jersey. It goes into one of the most violent cities and how police officers try to prevent that, expanding on how more police stops are conducted to try and stop any crime from happening. This video goes into the actual views from officers themselves and why they do what they do, no matter if there’s probable cause or not. But, like many officers, excessive force is always used and I think its unnecessary. Also, trust has a lot to do with violent arrests, police don’t trust suspects and civilians don’t trust police. Because of this, nothing might ever change.

As for changing a troubled police department, I believe more extensive training should be done and all officers should go through more training every year. Especially with everything going on in the world and all of the deadly force incidents, officers should have to go through training in the police academy for months and learn how to use less than lethal weapons, too. In my opinion, there have been man publicized deaths by police officers, that could have prevented if a taser or another weapon was used. Every police force should be coming up with ways to prevent deadly force.

A publicized case involving the a police department is Rodney King and the Los Angeles Police Department in 1991. Rodney King was beat by several police officers during a traffic stop. Not one officer was beating him, four were. This incident was caught on tape and all four officers were charged with excessive force and assault with a deadly weapon but, were acquitted of all charges. After that, the LA riots began, proving that police officers abuse their power and he public has been sick of it or more than 20 years. When will it stop? Soon I hope, and I hope changes to all police department policies are altered to prevent any more of these cases.

2) After watching Policing the police, I see how there are problems that offices face as well as can create. One scene keeps playing through my head in particular, the scene where they stop a pedestrian and almost immediately throw him to the ground. I can almost understand why the Newark police are aggressive in these situations but this example in particular is just an excessive use of force, that apparently was swept under the rug as much everything else seems to be.

The job of the police is to maintain safety and help provide justice to the communities they serve. To serve their communities they must be a part of it and some level of trust and rapport. In policing the police, the Newark PD officers in the gang unit didn’t really seem to see a problem with their actions, they believed they were justified, even after the DOJ investigation told them their practices were breaches of people’s rights. No one enjoys admitting they are wrong, most people get defensive, but part of fixing a troubled department is getting the officers to honestly review their practices and admitting that they need change and improve their practices. Without the officers actually accepting their problems there is no way that there can be change. Part of changing policy, is getting into and being part of the communities the officers serve, like Sgt. Peppers. There has to be an understanding that the officers are doing their absolute best to be involved with people and doing their jobs with investigations. Increasing community relations seems to be the biggest element in fixing a troubled department, aside from having proper infrastructure and leadership. When the community is happy and the majority of citizens trust the police, more can be done, the more people who see things, say things, and intelligence about crimes a lot of the time, is one of the most important things an officer can have.

One incident, that happened recently was when a Utah nurse, Alex Wubbles, was arrested for doing her job as a nurse. She was forcefully arrested because she would not take a blood sample from an unconscious patient, who was not under arrest and the police had no warrant for. Though an on going investigation it does seem that the nurse was unjustifiably arrested. The officer was extremely aggressive and temperamental, for no other reason than the nurse was unable to provide, by law, the patients blood sample. I believe this is one act that detracts from the public’s view and trust of the police and requires a change of policy/training of officers, unless this is strictly an isolated incident, but either way the officers involved should be punished.
