Mass Communication Theories

The purpose of this assignment is two-fold:

  1. To examine different theories of mass communication
  2. To analyse media (news articles, advertisements, new media) using mass communication theories.

A theoretical foundation of mass communication is essential for media literacy. There have been many theories proposed by scholars that attempt to explain the relationship between media and its audience. This assignment aims to broaden your understanding of the theoretical approach to understanding media.

Philosophy: The Chinese Room/Mind-Body Problem Assignment

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to give you practice in identifying metaphysical questions (Identify and apply a variety of epistemological, metaphysical and ethical theory), differentiating between a rhetorically good argument and a rationally good one (Understand the difference between a rhetorically good argument and a rationally good argument), and being able to reconstruct arguments given by philosophers (Identify, reconstruct and evaluation arguments posed by philosophers) and to have you think about the philosophers which we have read and talked about (Socrates, Nagel)(Identify a variety of ancient, modern and/or contemporary philosophers).

Task:

Tim Crane in “The Mind-Body Problem” gives many different stances regarding the problem and their own problems. Choose one of those pairs (the stance and its problem), explain to me both and tell me why you think it is a problem or not a problem.

The point break-down is:

1. 5pts to choose a pair (make it obvious)

2. 5pts for explaining the stance

3. 5pts for explaining the problem given

4. 5pts for telling me why you think it is good or bad

Each of these should take you around a paragraph to answer. Each of them is worth 5pts. Since this is worth 20pts, this is worth 5% of your total grade.

Submission:

To submit this assignment, I only accept .pdf, .doc, .odt, and .docx. I do not accept .pages. You can find where to submit in the upper right of this screen. As for all assignments in this class, the standard is Times New Roman, 12pt font, double spaced, 2-3 pages (that is, at least a few words onto the second page to the bottom of the third).

Discussion 2: Transference And Countertransference

Specific skills and knowledge are essential for a social worker working with children. Understanding transference and countertransference is crucial to a healthy therapeutic relationship. Both transference and countertransference can be evident in any client–therapist relationship, but are especially important in working with children because of a common instinct among adults to protect and nurture the young. The projection or relocation of one’s feelings about one person onto another, otherwise known as transference, is a common response by children (Gil, 1991). Countertransference, a practitioner’s own emotional response to a child, is also common.

For this Discussion, review the Malawista (2004) article.

By Day 4

Post your explanation why transference and countertransference are so common when working with children. Then, identify some strategies you might use to address both transference and countertransference in your work with children.

Support your posts with specific references to the Learning Resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

By Day 6

Respond to at least two colleagues who identified strategies different from your own by proposing alternative strategies.

Support your posts with specific references to the Learning Resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Week 9 Position Paper

Assignment: Position Paper

Sometimes, during heated discussions and debates about social policy, the underlying reasons for the policy go unnoticed. Advocates and policymakers may become so committed to their perspectives and to winning the debates that they lose focus on the larger context surrounding an issue. The purpose of policy is to improve the lives and well-being of individuals and groups in our society. As you assume the role of a social work policymaker, consider the importance of keeping the needs and experiences of vulnerable populations at the forefront of your mind in your advocacy efforts. This can help to assure effective policy practice.

For this Assignment, you will analyze in a state (Maryland), federal (United States) , or global social welfare policy that affects an at-risk, marginalized, oppressed, underrepresented, or over looked group population. Finally, consider the impact of social policy from the perspective of the group you selected.

Not An Essay, but before you answer a question write down the question first.

Assignment (5-7 double-spaced pages, APA format). In addition to a minimum of eight scholarly references, which may include electronic government documents and reputable websites, your paper should include:

1-A description of the current policy approach for addressing the social issue you selected

2- A description of the current policy goals for addressing the social issue you selected

3- A description of the population the current policy approach covers

4-An explanation of the funding levels for the current policy approach and whether they are sufficient to address the issue

5-An explanation of how this policy may affect at-risk, marginalized, underrepresented, overlooked, or oppressed populations. Identify a specific at-risk population.

6-An analysis of whether or not the policy meets the needs of the population groups most affected by the policy.

7-Recommendations for alternative policies that would address the gaps identified in the policy. Please be specific in recommendations.

Discussion: Policy Implementation Challenges

When a policy is launched, its success is dependent on a variety of stakeholders. As the politics of decision makers, executives, staff, clients, and social workers begin to influence the implementation process, their beliefs—and subsequent actions—determine the fate of the policy.

Often a social worker must step out of the comfort of his or her social service world and may find himself or herself making difficult decisions about ethical issues and/or may find himself or herself involved in implementing policies that he or she feels is against his or her social work values. How does a social worker handle the intricacies and challenges of policy implementation on both a personal and professional level?

In this Discussion, you explore policy implementation and the challenges faced by social workers during policy implementation.

By Day 3

Post your thoughts on whether social workers might try to undermine the implementation of specific policies. What ethical issues might they confront? Discuss how social workers can implement policies that they feel may be against their social work values. Discuss a specific policy’s impact that you would try to mitigate in the implementation phase. Provide an experience you have had with a policy you had difficulty implementing or a policy you are aware of that you would have serious qualms about implementing.

“Getting killed by police is a leading cause of death for young black men in America”,

In week 7, you will submit a written proposal (due before lecture on Nov. 16) in which you will write a brief description of your plans (topic, argument, division of responsibilities, time table) and an annotated bibliography of each of the readings used (max. 1 page per reading). While the proposal will be a single document for each group, each member should contribute towards one of the readings for the bibliography (i.e. you should have at least as many readings as group members). The readingsshould be readings from the course, and your annotated bibliography entries should focus on what parts of those readings are relevant to your project and how.

What Is The Difference Between What Is Known And What Is Believed?

What is the difference between what is known and what is believed? It may seem like an obvious question, but if you look below the surface and really investigate the difference between knowledge and belief, you may find yourself second-guessing some of your most basic assumptions. As a general definition, knowledge is something that is believed to be true and can be backed up with evidence. A belief is something that is believed to be true, but there is not adequate evidence. The difference between knowledge and belief seems pretty clear. However, how much evidence does it take to change a belief into knowledge? And, who decides what kind of evidence is reliable? Should knowledge be based on empiricism (knowledge that comes from experiencing the physical world), reason (knowledge that comes from logic), or a combination of both? Take a moment to reflect on these concepts, and then write 2–3 pages on the following: Think about someone in your life who loves you—it could be your mother, significant other, child, or even a pet. Do you know this person loves you, or do you believe this person loves you? State your argument for why you chose to categorize the idea as either knowledge or belief. Give 3 pieces of empirical evidence for the knowledge or belief, as well as 3 logical reasons. After looking through the evidence, do you still maintain your original categorization of knowledge or belief? Why?
