What are some of the studies and articles linking smoking to popular culture

Answer two of the following questions, and respond to at least one other student’s post afterward for a total of at least 400 words. (chapter 9 and 11)

1. What are some of the studies and articles linking smoking to popular culture, and what issues does Sternheimer point out about them? According to the reading, what are the more likely indicators/predictors of smoking in both the lives of teens and adults? Finally, what factors do you think relate to the steady drop in smoking rates in the United States since the 1990s?

2. According to Sternheimer, why might media conglomerates themselves focus on media and popular culture in regards to social problems? What role might they play in how Americans frame social problems like poverty? Beyond money itself, what overall impact does poverty have on the lives of children? Finally, why do you believe Americans as a whole have seemed so reluctant to talk about racism and poverty in our own country?

And please give a response to this post: (I will post after you finish)

Person1(zhenning)

1. The biggest issues with smoking is that it is blamed on the wrong cause, causing it to become something that is not being treated at the root – cigarette manufacturers and the overall tobacco industry. To divert the blame from them, instead the blame is put on impressionable teens and the influence of the media. This has a few benefits for the tobacco industry as this will not affect sales, as most smokers are adults (who are not targeted by anti-smoking campaigns).  What is probably the worst aspect of the influence of smoking is that the largest influencer/reason for smoking is ignored – that is a family member or someone close being a smoker. This is often the biggest reason for someone to start smoking.

In the field education experience, it is important to develop a safety plan to ensure the reduction of harm. Although social workers are always at risk of harm, certain areas of social work are higher risks than others. Social workers can run into dangerous situations, especially in cases of child abuse or domestic violence (Garthwait, 2017). It is understandable that in these situations that workers would face a higher likelihood of facing danger, as there is a tendency for violence, and the amount of intrusion that occurs in the familial setting.

Unfortunately, safety is a big concern in the social work field. According to Regehr & Glancy (2011) “87.8% of social workers in their study reported verbal harassment, 63.5% reported threats of physical harm, and 28.6% report being assaulted by a client” (p. 232). Although in my previous experience in the social work field I have not encountered things of this nature, it is always important to develop a safety plan.

My personal safety plan would be to ensure that my supervisor knows where I am at all times when I am out in the field. If I have to visit a home, I would attempt to schedule visits as early in the day-time as possible, especially in high-risk neighborhoods and accompanied by someone else if I felt uncomfortable. This coincides with my agency’s safety plan, as it also recommends having someone accompany you in cases where there is a perceived safety threat. Surprisingly, the agency recommends being cautious of what you wear. Not only should one wear items that aren’t overly flashy to reduce attracting negative attention and possible theft, but to dress comfortably in case one has to prepare to escape. It is also recommended that if one fears their own safety, to make it known to their supervisor, especially if threats have been made.

Garthwait (2017) references that “ social workers see themselves as helpers and expect most clients to be cooperative, at times they find themselves in situations which they must deal with clients who are angry, emotionally volatile, and threatening. (p. 41).” Working for the crisis hotline, I would make sure to plan for personal safety by having a phone accessible at all times. In having this phone, I would make sure to utilize it as a safety precaution and not as a pleasure. In addition, I would become familiar with all of the buildings exits. As Garthwait (2017) asserts“Social workers may be harmed physically or emotionally(p.44).” However, with a phone and exits being accessible  I would be able to contact authorities to notify them or exit the building away from harm.

“Aside from victims of intimate partner violence, mental health professionals are one of the highest risk groups for being stalked.”(Regehr, & Glancy, 2011, p. 233) Therefore, the concern of safety is high and safety planning is very beneficial. Regehr, & Glancy(2011) asserts that “organization encourages individuals to report violence, which helps to allow the organization to assist those who report by mobilizing medical treatment or psychological support services”, etc. This differs from the personal safety plan I suggested of carrying a mobile phone and becoming aware of all exit because the agency sent a clear message that violence against workers will not be tolerated and that legal actions will be taken. It also provides emotional support for individuals and workers who are abused or have been abused by violence.

Student Safety Plan

Social workers will meet their clients at some of the most vulnerable and challenging times of their lives, tensions can run high, due to this safety plans are a vital source of safety for the client and the social worker. Safety polices reflect the profession’s ethical values, are critical to the effective provision of services, and are integral to a positive, productive, and professional work life; attention to safety in the workplace can reduce the level of burnout and help with staff retention (National Association of Social Workers, Massachusetts Chapter, 2014).

My safety plan is as follows:

Situation

Intervention

Action plan

High Risk Situations

  • Avoid contact with co-defendants
  • Be aware of client’s known behavior patterns
  • Know the lessons that are planned, and any potential triggers
  • Watch out for bullying that occurs
  • Follow the incident with staff and provide any supporting documentation that may be needed
  • Stay calm and non-threating

Escalation

  • Stay neutral
  • Follow staff of agencies direction
  • Know the agencies policies
  • Remove any other adolescents from harm
  • Avoid arguing with the client

Threats

  • Report any threats made to staff immediately
  • Keep an open and non-threating body posture.
  • Look for an escape plan
  • Know the codes of the agency to be able to call for help

Violence

  • Remove myself from the situation
  • Allow agency staff to follow their procedures
  • Exit the situation at first sign of violence.

Post-incident

  • Provide staff with an account of the incident.
  • Seek supervision from field liaison and instructor

Another major concept of my safety as mentioned in the table is to know and understand the field agencies codes, this way I can be aware of any incidents occurring and take the necessary steps to protect the other clients and myself. Also, my safety plan would include never working alone, and knowing the emergency meeting locations of the agencies.

Differences of Student/Agency Safety Plan

My safety plan is much different than that of my field agency, my field placement’s safety plan has more details, with more interventions listed. Every organization or agency that I have worked for thus far in my career require their staff to attend North Carolina Interventions (NCI) Training. According to North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, 2019, NCI is a standardized training program to prevent the use of restraints and seclusion. The NCI training helps provide agencies with the least non-restrictive ways to manage irate clients. My safety plan focuses more on the safety of myself, where my field agency has individuals in place to manage hands on violent encounters. It is important that not all incidents have to have violence to be considered dangerous. Most incident can be prevented by effective preventative education for social workers, individual prevention strategies, and organizational policies that enhance safety (Regehr, C., & Glancy, G. 2011).

Historical Divides And Ethical Obligations Within Social Work

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) specifies the ethics and values of the profession in their Code of Ethics. Section 6.04 of the Code of Ethics (1999) states:

Social workers should engage in social and political action that seeks to ensure that all people have equal access to the resources, employment, services, and opportunities they require to meet their basic human needs and to develop fully. Social workers should be aware of the impact of the political arena on practice and should advocate for changes in policy and legislation to improve social conditions in order to meet basic human needs and promote social justice.(Preamble, p. 8)

With the requirement of social and political action among social workers, there is little political activity among clinical social workers. Why? What barriers exist that prevent social workers from fulfilling this ethical obligation?

What does it mean to be a macro social worker? A micro social worker? Do these differentiations have any real meaning? If not, why is this language used when referring to the social work profession?

In this Discussion, you will look at the obligation of social workers to engage in political action in their practice and discuss why there appear to be different perceptions of the responsibility for political action among social work professionals.

By Day 4

Post an analysis of historical divides (such as the schism between Jane Addams and Mary Richmond) and historical influences on current social work practice with respect to policy advocacy and action. Do such schisms exist in contemporary social work? If you think these divides exist, how do they prevent social workers from fulfilling their ethical obligation(s)? Are they important differentiations?

Aristotle’s Distinction Between Practical Knowledge And Theoretical Knowledge

In at least 300 words answer the following question using at least 2 academic sources in APA format.

Clarify as much as possible Aristotle’s distinction between practical knowledge and theoretical knowledge. Does an understanding of this distinction help account for why persons who know certain habits or behaviors are harmful, still persist in those behaviors?

The Pledge To Eliminate Poverty

The Pledge to Eliminate Poverty

As  Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss in Chapter 2: Wealth and Poverty, the  Millennium Development Goals were created to provide developing  countries support through the partnership of developed countries. The  first goal is to “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger” in the world.

According to this, the population is still increasing in the world’s poorest regions.  Take a look at the Millennium Development Goals report (https://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/2015_MDG_Report/pdf/MDG%202015%20rev%20(July%201).pdf).

The  report notes that progress in reducing extreme hunger is uneven across  regions and countries. Looking at the graph on page 14 of the report,  which countries have the least reduction in extreme hunger? Which  countries have the greatest reduction in extreme hunger? What factors  contribute to this uneven progress? What are some possible strategies  for creating more progress in these countries?

Review  to this  post of your classmates and respond, offering a substantive comment on that classmate’s position on the  issue(s).

According to the  Millennium Development Goals report, reducing extreme hunger has been a  major goal.  For regions classified as extreme poverty, people must be  living on less than $1.25 per day, which equates to under $40.00 a  month!  Most people spend more than that on one meal out.  The two  regions that had the least amount of drop in extreme hungry is the  Sub-Saharan African which only dropped 28% and Western Asia which  dropped by 46%.  The two regions that had the biggest drops in extreme  poverty was China with a 94% drop and South-Eastern Asia with an 84%  drop.

Several factors  contributed to uneven progress in reducing extreme poverty.  These  factors are as follows:  sex, age, disability, ethnicity, and geographic  location.  Women remain discriminated against and this is a major cause  of uneven progress and keeps them in poverty longer than men.  Conflict  is another threat to human development.  Education, or the lack of, is  also a major contributor.  Children in extreme poverty rarely go to  school.

Some possible  strategies to help end extreme poverty are education, gender equality,  and to improve health.  Education would help tremendously.  Young  children need to be in school, and they are not in these regions. In the  poorer countries, 34.4% of children did not complete primary school.   Without any education, the generations will continue the same path they  are on now.  By promoting gender equality, more women would be able to  find work and help their family move from the poverty level.  Improvements on health care and health conditions would also benefit  these countries. One option would be the offer of birth control and for  women to be able to decide if they want more children would also help to  lower the population numbers and not add more people into poverty.

Thanks!

Identifies the three sections your paper will cover;

Imagine you have been hired as a consultant for the United Nations. You have been asked to write an analysis on how global population growth has caused the following problem and how it affects a developing country of your choosing:

A growing global population that consumes natural resources is partially to blame for the release of greenhouse gases since human consumption patterns lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and farming (overturned dirt releases CO2). However, the critical issue is the burning of fossil fuels (hydrocarbons) such as coal oil and natural gas to produce energy that is used for things like electricity production, and vehicle, heating, and cooking fuels.

The UN has asked that you choose a developing country from this list: https://www.mrs.org/developing-countries-list.

The UN has also given you the following guidelines.

Content

The UN has asked that your paper contain three sections. It has asked that each section be one page (or approximately 300 words) in length and answer specific questions, identified in the outline below. It also asks that you use examples from your developing country when answering the questions.

Introduction

Provide an introduction of half a page minimum that addresses points a-e below.

  1. Explains the problem the UN has asked you to address in your own words;
  2. Identifies the three sections your paper will cover;
  3. Identifies the developing country you will consider;
  4. Tells the UN which causes of greenhouse gases you will explore; and
  5. Provides a one-sentence statement of your solutions at the end of your introduction paragraph.

Section I. Background

  1. What are greenhouse gases?
  2. How do greenhouse gases contribute to global warming?

Section II. How Emissions Causes Problems for the Developing World

  1. Which countries produce the most greenhouse gases?
  2. What are the economic challenges of these emissions (include examples from your chosen country)?
  3. What are the security challenges of these emissions (include examples from your chosen country)?
  4. What are the political challenges of these emissions (include examples from your chosen country)?

Section III. Causes and Solutions of Greenhouse Gases

  1. What are two causes of greenhouse gases?
  2. What are potential solutions to address each of the causes you identified?
  3. What is the relationship between population control and greenhouse gases?

Conclusion

  • Provide a conclusion of half a page minimum that includes a summary of your findings that the United Nations can use to inform future policy decisions.

Success Tips

  • In answering each question, use examples from your developing country to illustrate your points.
  • The UN needs facts and objective analysis on which to base future policy decisions; avoid personal opinion and make sure your answers are based on information you find through research.

Formatting Requirements

  • Make sure your paper consists of four to six pages (re: 1,200 words minimum, not including the cover page, reference page, and quoted material [if any]).
  • Create headings for each section of your paper as follows:
    • Section I. Background
    • Section II. How Emissions Causes Problems for the Developing World
    • Section III. Causes and Solutions for Greenhouse Gases
  • Use and cite at least five credible sources in your research. A list of potential resources is available below.
  • Make sure your paper contains both in-text citations and a source list, per SWS guidelines: Refer to the Strayer Writing Standards (SWS) document for reference.
  • Include a cover page with your name, the country you selected, the date you submitted the paper, and your instructor’s name.

DISCUSSION 1

Prepare: Begin your discussion post by viewing the CBS video, CBS Morning News “Plagiarism” story. Then, review 6 Ways to Avoid Plagiarism and Generally Be a Cool Person.
Reflect Icon Reflect: As you watch the video, think about the implications and consequences of plagiarism in the workplace and in the entertainment industry.
Write Icon Write: After watching the video, describe your reaction to the video and the implications to your own work. What did you learn about the seriousness of plagiarism and how did this video change (or not) your understanding of it? Do you know of any other instances of plagiarism either in school or beyond?Next, read the scenarios below that highlight some of the most common plagiarism issues at the college level. The scenario is assigned to you by the first initial of your last name in the chart below. Carefully read the scenario and respond as directed.

First Initial of Last Name Assigned Pair
A – H Scenario 1
I – P Scenario 2
Q – Z Scenario 3

Scenario 1:
Copy-Pasting
The discussion board prompt for Serena’s American History class asks students to brainstorm ways to improve the democratic system of government. Serena searches online to help her come up with ideas for what to write. She comes across the following sentences and copies and pastes them into her discussion post without any additions or her own commentary: “We cannot improve on the system of government handed down to us by the founders of the Republic. There is no way to improve upon that. But, what we can do is to find new ways to implement that system and realize our destiny.” Serena submits her discussion post but has a bad feeling about it. She is not sure what she should have done differently.
Write a paragraph of advice for Serena explaining why copying and pasting in the way that she did was wrong and what she should do differently next time.

Scenario 2:
Paraphrasing Without Citation
Kelly is researching the representation of females in film for her composition final. She wants to discuss the films of Kathryn Bigelow. She searches for “Kathryn Bigelow” in the Ashford University Library databases and locates an article by Joel Johnson that discusses Bigelow’s film, The Hurt Locker. Kelly finds a sentence that she feels perfectly covers what she wants to say about Bigelow’s filmmaking: “Bigelow is one of the few female directors who has consistently tackled ‘masculine’ subjects in her films.” She writes in her paper, “The subjects of Bigelow’s films are often male-centric, which is rare for a female director” but does not credit the idea to the source.
Write a paragraph of advice for Kelly explaining the importance of citing sources. Describe to Kelly what steps she needs to now take to avoid plagiarizing the author of the article.

Scenario 3:
Fabrication
Shawn is assigned a paper on biases in the judicial system. Shawn is having difficulty figuring out where to find sources for this topic. He has searched online and once briefly in the Ashford University Library databases but has not found what he is looking for: statistics of the number of people currently in jail in the United States versus 10 years ago. Feeling overwhelmed and frustrated, Shawn decides that he knows enough about this topic to guess an average number. He writes, “The number of incarcerated males in America has increased by 10% in the last 10 years.”
Write a paragraph of advice for Shawn explaining why creating a fact statistic is wrong and what he should do differently next time. Explain to Shawn what he should have done in this situation instead of fabricating a statistic.

Your initial post should contain a minimum of 350 words and be written in complete sentences. It must answer all aspects of the prompt (refer to “Think about it this way” below).  Demonstrate what you learned in the APA Skill Activity this week by citing your sources correctly.   Your initial post must be posted by 11:59 Thursday evening.

Discuss Icon Guided Response:Reply to at least two of your classmates who explored a different scenario than that which you examined. Will the advice they provided be helpful in the future for the individual in the scenario? What might your classmates add to their advice to make it even more helpful? Post your two peer responses during the week to maximize the opportunity for vigorous discussion.

DISCUSSION

Prepare: Take a few minutes to think about the material that we’ve covered in this course so far.

Reflect Icon Reflect: Reflect on what you found interesting, surprising, or confusing in this past week. What did you learn that caused you to understand an issue or an event differently?  What habits or tips did you discover that helped you to complete your course work more effectively or efficiently?
Write Icon Write: This discussion forum is an opportunity for you to explore topics that interest you, share critical insights and questions that you are working with, share your struggles and triumphs, and discuss difficulties that may have arisen this week, hopefully finding solutions. Your initial post should describe your experiences in the course this past week, prompting further discussion. You should address at least two of the following questions:

  • What struck you in particular as you explored the course materials this week?
  • What insights have you had?
  • What have you been struggling with?
  • What questions have come up for you at this point?
  • Do you have any helpful tips that you’ve picked up in this course or in a past course?
  • Do you have questions about the assignment that your classmates might be able to help with? (If you have a question for the instructor, be sure to contact your instructor through email or in the Ask Your Instructor Forum).

You are required to post at least 100 total words in this forum this week. You can post one time or ten times, the only requirements are that you post at least 100 words total and that you engage in conversation related to course content. Ask questions, answer questions, provide extra resources you found that are interesting, or engage in a debate about something you learned this week. The only requirement is that your comments have to relate to the course content.

Provide a full explanation of the issues that you discuss in your posts. For example, if you write that you had difficulty thinking of a topic for your annotated bibliography, explain where in the process of determining a topic you had difficulty. Could you not think of any topics? Could you think of too many topics? Did you have a hard time finding useful information when you did background research?

Similarly, when responding to your classmates, be sure to elaborate. For example, if you write that you also found a specific topic interesting, explain what about that topic you found interesting and why. Is it the same aspects of the topic that your classmate found interesting? Were you unaware that events associated with the topic took place? Did the information that you learned change your understanding of those events?

If you have a question for your instructor, you should contact your instructor through email or in the “Ask Your Instructor” board. This Open Forum is a place for you to collaborate and connect with your classmates as well as support one another. Your instructor will monitor this board and may post, but he/she is not expected to answer all questions.

If you notice a classmate is struggling with something that you can help with, use your responses as a way to support them. Helping out your classmates will not only benefit them, but it will also help to solidify your own knowledge.
