Ashford 6: – Week 5 – Final Project

Director’s Presentation
The Final Project will illustrate how family-centered programs, theories, and concepts support the early childhood classroom and the child’s family. The family-centered approach asserts that family involvement is important for a young child’s cognitive and social development. The Final Project, which will be presented via PowerPoint, will address the following scenario:
You are the director of a preschool program that serves children ages three to five. You are giving a presentation to teachers and parents to encourage partnerships in the education of the whole child. The objective of your presentation is to encourage adaptive skills and to facilitate strategies in which to maximize these abilities that can be taught in the classroom and extended at home. Address the following points:

  1. Self-help skills.
  2. Pro-social skills.
  3. Self-regulation skills.

For each of the three skill-sets:

  1. Explain the desired skills and how they relate to the      classroom and home.
  2. Identify and discuss two to three strategies for      teaching the skill-set to children in the classroom.
  3. Explain how you will help parents to utilize the      strategies to reinforce the desired ability at home.
  4. Identify and describe a resource (either community or      web-based) for the parents to use to continue their learning at home.

The PowerPoint presentation must be 18 to 20 slides in length, not including title and reference slides. You are encouraged to creatively address the material by including graphics, visuals, charts, graphs, and/or sound. Slides should be designed to clearly and concisely address the material. The PowerPoint presentation must be formatted according to APA style (i.e., include the title and reference slides and citations within each slide when appropriate.) The notes section of the PowerPoint must be utilized to expand on your presented points. The notes section should also include any additional information necessary to explain or show your point of view.  You must also use at least two scholarly sources in addition to the course text and include at least four community resources (with websites included).
Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Writing Prompt #1

Characters do what they do because of their various motivations and desires.Often, their desires conflict with their ethical or moral responsibilities. For example, a personal belief, a love, a thirst for vengeance, a resolve to rectify a wrong, or some other ambition may cause a character to conflict with a moral obligation. Write about a literary work in which a character’s motivations/desire conflict with his/her ethical responsibilities. Remember that you are analyzing the literary text–not commenting on whether or not the behaviors are ethical or “right” in your opinion. Instead, you should focus on the moral dilemma the character experiences and analyze how he/she wrestles with this dilemma beyond what is obvious in the plot. What literary elements draw out this conflict?

Suggested texts:
Stories (choose one):

· “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” Flannery O’Connor

· “The Blue Hotel,” Stephen Crane

Write an analysis of a key character in a literary work. Describe two to three key actions of the character, or how the character responds to events. What do the actions reveal about the character? Do the character’s actions fit together, or do they contradict each other? If they contradict, what does that contradiction say about the character’s emotional and mental capacity? Analyze the character’s psychological background. Why does the character act in the way he/she does? How does the author’s characterization in the text reflect this psychological background?

Suggested texts:
Stories (choose one):

Writing Prompt #3

Most often, literary works have both internal conflict (individual v. self) and external conflict (individual v. individual, society, nature, or technology). Additionally, one can often find that a character’s internal conflict is linked to an external one. Choose a text in which both an internal and external conflict are evident to you. How does the external conflict illuminate the internal one? What meaningful parallels or incongruencies do you observe when comparing the two, and what is the significance within the context of the story?

Suggested texts:
Stories (choose one):

· “No Name Woman,” Maxine Hong Kingston

· “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin

· “The Things They Carried,” Tim O’Brien

· “The Cheater’s Guide to Love,” Junot Diaz

In some stories, characters come into conflict with the culture in which they live. Often, a character feels alienated in his/her community or society due to race, gender, class or ethnic background. Choose a text that shows this kind of conflict. How is the character alienated from community and how does she/he respond to it? What does that character’s alienation say about the surrounding society’s assumptions, morality and values? In what way(s) do literary elements reflect how that society defines race, gender, class and/or ethnicity? How does this create conflict for the character?

Suggested texts:
Stories (choose one):

· “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin

who has the best chance of getting out of the contract due to unconsionability?

Ashford 3: – Week 2 – Discussion 2

The Uniform Commercial Code (UCC)

Read the Ace Heating and Cooling scenario in your text and answer the   following questions:
a.    Under UCC 2-302, who has the best chance of getting out   of the contract due to unconsionability?
b.    The symbol for justice features a woman wearing a   blindfold illustrating that the law should be applied the same way regardless   of who the parties are. Does the UCC rule seem to contradict this? Which   approach do you think is more ethical?
c.    Note that both Glamour and Shady Rest are businesses,   and courts rarely find that contracts between two businesses are   unconscionable. The rationale is that a business is a sophisticated entity,   familiar with transactions and able to protect itself. Do you think Glamour   and Shady Rest are in a comparable position in regard to this contract? Why   or why not?
Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your classmates, explaining your   position and why you agree or disagree with their comments. Do you think the   contracts are fair or unfair considering the parties had a disproportionate   ability to bargain? Under UCC Section 2-302 the court has the discretion to   find the contract unconscionable. Do you think this is a good approach? What   other methods to resolve this issue is appropriate?

You will have already selected a research topic from the list below in Week Three of the course.  You must continue to use your selected topic.  The topics include:
