You land a job as a fund manager at a well-known investment bank. You have been awarded $25 million to manage/invest in one stock. The fund is a pension/retirement fund so it has a long-term outlook with a moderate risk of capital loss and a required rate of return of 9% per annum. Your task is to determine whether a fund you manage should invest $25 million in the stock of a company of your choice as your first analysis/investment decision. Choose a U.S. public company. Do not choose a bank or financial intermediary (i.e. investment bank, insurance company, brokerage house, etc.). Your decision to invest or not to invest will be supported by a research paper. Note: Most of the data needed for this assignment can be found at Yahoo/finance. Go to Yahoo/finance, select your business, and look at the table of contents on the left side of the page. Based on the concepts covered in this course, your analysis will involve the following: Business Strategy Analysis: Understand a company’s business and competitive strategy. Which of the three general competitive strategies does the company employ (low-cost supplier, differentiation, focus)? This should be contained in no more than three paragraphs. Don’t spend time writing the company’s history. This is an analysis, not a history lesson. Accounting Analysis: Do the accounting practices employed by the company generally reflect an accurate picture of the company’s economic performance? Has your research uncovered any restatements of earnings or other financial statement announcements that suggest financial statements may be of questionable value? This can be done by reviewing the company’s 8K filings with the SEC (a mandatory requirement for this article). These filings can generally be found on the Company’s website under “Investor Relations” – “SEC Filings.” Financial Analysis: Analyze a company’s financial ratios and cash flow metrics relative to its historical performance. For the purposes of this research paper, a 2-year retrospective is sufficient and required. You must use at least 10 of the ratios noted, including all four profitability ratios. Forward-looking analysis: Develop forecast performance metrics and list assumptions related to your forecast. List the assumptions and reasons for your prediction. You can also cite the work of other analysts who have published forecasts for the time frame you are dealing with (hint: look at Yahoo/Finance – Analyst Opinion Conclusion: Would you invest $25 million in this particular company? Does it support your conclusion? Remember that negative conclusions are just as valid and valuable as positive ones. The following are general guidelines for format and organization. Format: At least ten pages (including self-provided exhibits), page number. Typing, double-spaced. New Times Roman (i.e. commercial) font, 12 pt. Margins – 1.25 inches.
