What is a Metacognitive Log? And why are we doing this anyway?

Metacognition is the practice of thinking about your thinking. By getting under the hood, so to speak, we are able to fine tune the process and become better thinkers and learners.

Each week, you will be invited into the practice of metacognition through a variety of prompts.

This first prompt invites you to make a plan that will also serve as a contract to help keep you accountable.

It also gets you into the habit of identifying and asking questions – something we will practice more as the semester progresses.

For this Assignment: Week 1 Metacognitive Log:

• Your first submission should have three entries, each with headings that are numbered and titled as below.
• Please carefully read the instructions below each heading and write each entry in your own words. This is an excellent way to practice and develop your communication skills.

Then, write down a detailed plan that describes actions you will take to succeed in this class.

Where appropriate, include a schedule of how you will budget your study time each week.

ML Entry #2 – Evidence/Interpretation Log

In your second entry, please collect THREE pieces of evidence from videos and/or readings and give an interpretation of that evidence.

You may copy material from the text or another source BUT, if you do, you must cite the source. Interpretations MUST be in your own words.

Please format your journal as shown in the example below, using your own excerpts from the learning materials.

What is evidence? And how is it interpreted?

Evidence is a piece of information – something that we observe or measure – that helps us to better understand the world.

An interpretation uses evidence to explain a phenomenon.

For example, if, all of a sudden you felt the ground moving beneath you, you might interpret that ground motion as evidence of an earthquake.
