Today we capitalize on perceptual illusions and pattern filling, and apply them to new technologies and formats. For instance, an MP3 is a compressed audio file that has actually removed some of the sounds present in the audio signal – yet our brain fills in the gaps. Can you think of another example of how we use this natural tendency towards pattern completion or illusion in today’s art or technology?

second : Within the retina what are the two types of cells and define their functions?

third:  Popular Press.  Find a popular press (non-scientific!!!) article about a topic in psychology. One option is  www.psychologytoday.com. However, you may choose to write on a news report or article. The nightly news and (of course) the internet are ripe sources.  Apply your understanding of good (or poor) critical thinking to psychology.  You will write a two paragraph minimum paper on this article.  The first paragraph will: 

(1) include the hypothesis and (1A) a brief summary of the major points that support it (what does the report, article, etc. claim?).

(2) address if the research was funded. If so, by whom was it funded and what was their motivation?

(3) address whether this seems a probable interpretation, why/why not?

The second paragraph will: 

(4) Find and read the original research. Write out the findings of the original work.

(5) discuss the general methods used in the study

(6) discuss the sampling procedure and to whom the study applies

(7) discuss how well or how poorly the popular press represented the original work. This section should be very detailed. 

(8) identify and explain the consequences/problems with misrepresenting scientific research to the public.
