“5 pages of full typed text circumscribed by one inch margins, making each double spaced page aproximately 250 words, 25-27 lines with a standard type 12 point font” INSTRUCTIONS AND DETAILS Controversial Issue for Term Paper The assignment this session is to write a paper on a person of your choice you believe made a significant impact upon American history at some point from 1607-1877 (within the general scope of this class). You may choose any person you can make an effective argument about for this paper, even if they are only important for a small period or have been largely forgotten in the modern United States. For example, you can make this argument with a politician like Abraham Lincoln, a notable woman like Abigail Adams, reformers like Frederick Douglass or a lesser-known figure like Francis Asbury (helped establish the Methodist Church). There are numerous topics that work, though you will want to have an idea of what direction you intend to take by the end of week five. At the same time, you need to avoid abstract ideas, like the average worker in 1840s New York or people who were alive in this period but had their impact after 1877, like Robert Lincoln or Booker T. Washington. If you do have questions let me know via email and I can provide guidiance for you. Being that this paper is only five full pages long, try to keep your topics as simple as possible to ensure you have the space to fully deal with what you want to discuss. But, be sure to check with me if you are confused about the topic or want my opinion on whether or not your paper will work. Primary and Secondary Sources The basis of this paper will be constructed around primary sources. A primary source is defined as something written by a contemporary in the period being studied. The sources you have used for the document question each week fit into this category, as do things like diaries, letters, publications, speeches, memoirs, etc. written by those who took place or witnessed events. A secondary source is simply something written by a historian studying the period in question. For instance, a letter written by Abraham Lincoln or a newspaper article from 1863 describing the Civil War are primary sources. The book that Eric Foner recently published on Lincoln is a secondary source. This paper requires that you consult at least four primary sources. These can be four separate documents out of the Voices of Freedom book, four newspaper articles or some combination of the various examples I mentioned in the previous paragraph. Some possibilities are provided IN ADDITION, you need to include at least two secondary sources that are peer reviewed pieces (articles, books, etc.) written by historians (or someone else functioning as one). You must include sources other than your textbook (or any other textbook). The discussions prior to the documents in the Voices of Freedom reader do not count as well. Since online encyclopedias like Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, they are not valid secondary sources.   Plagiarism: Clearly plagiarism is not to be tolerated and feigning ignorance or someone else telling you it was ok will not be accepted either. Finding a paper or sections of a paper on the internet, using a paper from another class or a colleague will not be tolerated and will result in a grade of a zero. At the same time, using parts of another author’s work and incorporating it as your own also constitutes plagiarism. While not plagiarism per say, long quotations of secondary sources is little better and will also result in a grade reduction. In both cases you are not presenting your own arguments but someone else’s. Term Paper Expectations: The Term Paper requires you, first, to critically analyze primary sources and, second, to research related secondary sources before typing the paper. It provides you with the opportunity to develop research and writing skills as well as to synthesize knowledge about a controversial issue. In order to earn the maximum points, you must submit a paper that accomplishes the following: ·         It considers the controversial issue announced by the instructor in the Discussions area (note the initial discussion topic on the course schedule). ·         It identifies at least four primary sources (i.e., letters, diaries, publications) that relate to this issue. ·         It consults two valid secondary sources (besides the textbook) that help to develop a thesis. ·         It constructs a thesis statement based upon the primary and secondary sources. ·         It incorporates an introduction, body, and conclusion. ·         It organizes paragraphs with approximately six-eight sentences developing a single topic. ·         It avoids spelling errors, awkward language, improper grammar, flawed punctuation, and other compositional mistakes. It includes at least five pages of full typed text circumscribed by one inch margins, making each double spaced page approximately 250 words and 25-27 lines with a standard type 12 point font. It uses the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) for documenting all quotations and paraphrases (Failure to provide proper documentation is deemed plagiarism). It adds a complete bibliography that properly lists the sources used for the paper.
